Russian scientists develop AI-based software to identify cancer cells

Moscow, 4 August (SANA)A team of Russian scientists has developed a new software program based on artificial intelligence (AI) and neural network technologies to identify different types ofhuman cellsand distinguish cancerous cells from healthy ones, a development that researchers say could improve disease diagnosis and support the development of more accurate and effective treatments.Sputnik quoted the press office of the Russian Science Foundation as saying that the software, named scParadise, was developed by researchers from Lomonosov Moscow State University in cooperation with the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology and the Center for Strategic Planning and Management of Medical and Biological Health Risks.According to the foundation, the software analyzes genetic data to identify cell types and predict their biological characteristics, providing researchers with a detailed picture of cellular behavior.The research team said the program can automatically distinguish between cancerous and healthy cells while also identifying immune cells associated with chronic inflammation in people with obesity. The capability could contribute to the development of targeted therapies tailored to each patient’s health condition.Researchers explained that understanding cell characteristics in greater detail helps reveal thebiological mechanismsunderlying disease development, particularly conditions whose causes remain only partially understood. They said such knowledge may support personalized treatment strategies that address the causes of disease rather than focusing solely on symptom management.Elizaveta Chichikhina, a researcher involved in the study, said the software is built on advanced neural network architectures trained using single-cell sequencing data collected from several laboratories and integrated into a unified database to improve analytical accuracy.She said the new platform could strengthen medical diagnostics by distinguishing healthy cells from diseased ones and identifying immune cells linked tochronic inflammation, thereby supporting the design of personalized therapies that more effectively target the underlying causes of disease.Researchers added that integrating data from multiple laboratories into a single analytical framework enabled the software to produce more consistent and reliable results across different datasets.The application of artificial intelligence to the analysis of cells and genetic information is increasingly regarded as one of the most promising areas of modern medicine. Researchers say AI tools can acceleratebiological dataanalysis, improve diagnostic precision and assist in developing patient-specific treatment approaches.Although additional validation and broader clinical application will be required before such technologies become part of routine medical practice, the developers believe AI-powered analytical platforms such as scParadise could become valuable tools for biomedical research and precision medicine.
