Pezeshkian: Iran seeks no escalation, will defend itself 'with full capabilities'
President Masoud Pezeshkian says Iran does not seek to fuel tensions in West Asia but will tolerate no compromise when it comes to defending its territorial integrity.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran does not seek to escalate tensions or instability in the region. However, it will act with its full capabilities to defend the country's security, national interests, and territorial integrity,” Pezeshkian said on Monday.
The remarks came after US President Donald Trump said he had decided to hold off on ordering American forces to carry out new aerial assaults against Iran at the urging of Persian Gulf allies Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Trump also claimed that talks with Iran would restart. However, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran is not currently holding any negotiations with Washington.
Baghaei clarified that Iran is in talks with Oman to establish a safe, “temporary” route for vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic waterway which has remained under Iran’s control since the early days of the illegal US-Israeli aggression against Iran.
Earlier, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the country would deliver a “decisive and proportionate” response to any US-Israeli “hostile actions” or any “participation and co-operation” by regional states.
The US and the Israeli regime launched their illegal war of aggression against Iran on February 28 by assassinating Leader of the Islamic Revolution Seyyed Ali Khamenei, along with senior military commanders. The Persian Gulf Arab countries aided the adversaries in the terrorist military assault.
However, forty days later on April 8, the enemies were forced to accept a ceasefire amid Iran's brave resistance, successful retaliatory operations, and powerful grip on the Strait of Hormuz.
Tehran and Washington signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding on June 17. But Washington has effectively violated the deal by striking Iran.
In response, the Iranian armed forces have conducted devastating attacks against strategic American targets across West Asia.
