Presidente Luis Abinader inaugura el techado del Politécnico Femenino Mercedes Morel que beneficiará a más de 600 estudiantes en La Vega
La Vega.- As part of his commitment to strengthening the education and well-being of Dominican youth, President Luis Abinaderinaugurated this Saturday the roof of the Mercedes Morel Women's Polytechnic, a work that will benefit more than 600 students and will contribute to improving the conditions for the development of academic, sports, cultural and community activities in the province of La Vega.
The infrastructure, executed by the Directorate of School Infrastructure (DIE), directed by engineer Roberto Herrera, will offer a safe and adequate space for the educational community and residents of the area, which allows activities to be carried out throughout the year.
During the event, the Minister of Education, Luis Miguel De Camps, highlighted that the work is part of President Luis Abinader's vision of guaranteeing decent and safe educational centers for learning.
"This work is also part of that preparation and the vision of a safe, dignified school capable of offering the best opportunities to learn and live together," he said.
The official also reported that the Ministry of Education is in the final phase of preparations for the start of the 2026-2027 school year, scheduled for next August 24.
He explained that, in coordination with the School Infrastructure Directorate, sustained work is being carried out to ensure that all schools are in a position to receive students.
Support for youth talent and leadership
De Camps also congratulated the student Carmela Núñez Tapia, from the fifth grade of Secondary School, for having been selected to represent the country in the Harvard Model United Nations 2027, and assured that she will have the support of the Government to participate in that international competition.
"We are proud, Carmela, of this achievement of participation and, of course, you will have all the support that is necessary for representation in that debate competition," said the minister, who recalled that the fifth edition of the National Debate Competition of the Dominican educational system recently concluded.
Likewise, he valued the trajectory of the Mercedes Morel Women's Polytechnic and the contribution of the Ángeles Custodiosa congregation to the training of generations of young people, as well as reiterated the Government's commitment to continue supporting this educational work.
Student highlights investment in education
Representing the student body, Carmela Núñez Tapia assured that the new roof represents a commitment to the future of Dominican youth.
"This roof is not just a structure of steel and concrete; it is the reflection that when you invest in education, you build the future of a country," he said.
The student thanked President Luis Abinader for his support of education and highlighted that initiatives such as educational robotics, STEAM training, United Nations simulations and science fairs have allowed thousands of young people to develop their talent, leadership and innovation.
"Today we are honored by the presence of a president and a minister who have demonstrated with actions that they believe in Dominican youth and in the power to transform education," he stated.
Recognition of commitment to education
The blessing of the work was carried out by Sister Zurina Blanco, legal representative of the religious congregation Ángeles Custodios, who thanked President Luis Abinader for his vision and firm commitment to strengthening Dominican education.
The president was accompanied at the activity by the Minister of Sports, Kelvin Cruz; the provincial governor, Luisa Jiménez de la Mota; the mayor of La Vega, Amparo Custodio, as well as legislative and educational authorities and community representatives.

Explicó que, en coordinación con la Dirección de Infraestructura Escolar, se desarrolla un trabajo sostenido para asegurar quetodos los planteles estén en condiciones de recibir a los estudiantes. Respaldo al talento y liderazgo de la juventud De Camps también felicitó a la estudianteCarmela Núñez Tapia, de quinto grado de Secundaria, por haber sidoseleccionada para representar al país en el Harvard Model United Nations 2027, y aseguró que contará con elrespaldo del Gobiernopara participar en esa competencia internacional. "Nos enorgullecemos, Carmela, de ese logro de participación y, por supuesto, tendrás todo el apoyo que sea necesario para la representación en esa competencia de debate", afirmó el ministro, quien recordó querecientemente concluyó la quinta edición de la Competencia Nacional de Debatedel sistema educativo dominicano. Asimismo, valoró la trayectoria del Politécnico Femenino Mercedes Morel y el aporte de lacongregación Ángeles Custodiosa la formación degeneraciones de jóvenes, así como reiteró el compromiso del Gobierno de continuar apoyando esa labor educativa. Estudiante destaca inversión en educación En representación del estudiantado, Carmela Núñez Tapia aseguró queel nuevo techadorepresentauna apuesta por el futuro de la juventud dominicana. "Este techado no es solamente una estructura de acero y concreto; es el reflejo de que cuando se apuesta por la educación, se construye el futuro de un país",manifestó. La estudiante agradeció el respaldo del presidente Luis Abinader a la educación y destacó que iniciativas comola robótica educativa, la formación STEAM, las simulaciones de las Naciones Unidas y las ferias científicashan permitido que miles de jóvenes desarrollen sutalento, liderazgo e innovación.
