La Vega.-President Luis Abinader concluded his agenda in La Vega with a supervisory visit to the progress of the Camú River Multiple Use Project, Guaigüí Dam, whose construction was resumed in July 2025, after having started more than 20 years ago and then remaining in a state of abandonment.

This work is part of the projects that President Abinader's government continues, so that they can later be delivered to society, generate greater well-being and promote national development.

When responding to the press, the head of state indicated that the Guaigüí dam's main objective is to supply drinking water, control floods and generate electricity through a hydropumping system that will be implemented in the country for the first time.

"75 million dollars had been invested, which at today's cost is more than 100 million dollars that were buried here and we are going to take advantage of all that," said the president, accompanied by the general administrator of Egehid, Rafael Salazar.

Its construction has an estimated projection of 30 months and, once delivered, it is expected to allow irrigation of some 77,000 agricultural tasks.

Currently, the project is developed by the Dominican Hydroelectric Generation Company (Egehid), after having been designed and initiated by the Dominican Institute of Hydraulic Resources (Indrhi) about two decades ago.

Project that represents hope

When blessing the work, Father Julio Sicard said that it represents a source of life, well-being and the hope of an entire province that is dying for water and a response to the need for water for future generations.

According to the information provided by Rafael Salazar, the project reactivation process has advanced by 82% with the restoration of 18 kilometers of access roads, installation of a temporary camp, and cleaning and restoration of the diversion tunnel. Likewise, work is being done on the basic design, the structural evaluation of the diversion tunnel and the updating of the budget and work schedule.

He added that the next milestone will mark the beginning of the main works, starting in September, which include the intervention of the diversion tunnel, the stabilization of the slope of the right bank and the beginning of the dam wall.

Salazar also explained that the complementary topographic, geophysical and hydrological studies were 100% completed, while the seismic hazard and environmental impact studies, as well as the monitoring plan for the diversion tunnel, are more than 50% complete.

Reversible energy hydroelectric

Egehid has incorporated a reversible energy hydroelectric plant (hydropumping) into the project, which will take advantage of the surplus in the energy supply during daylight hours, to raise the water from the dam to an upper reservoir, and thus produce about 220 megawatts of electricity.

This technology allows energy to be stored by pumping in periods of low demand and to generate electricity during the hours of greatest demand, which strengthens the reliability and flexibility of the national electrical system.

During the tour, the president was accompanied by the director of Indrhi, Olmedo Caba; the geologist Osiris de León; Coraavega executives, Yúnior Torres and Omar Beato; the Minister of Sports, Kelvin Cruz; Governor Luisa de la Mota; Senator Ramón Rogelio Genao; the deputy administrator of Egehid, René Mateo, and the president of the Administrative Council of the entity, Rosa Isabel Ruiz.

Notes
