»An Accurate Description of the Friuli« (Fori Iulii accurata descriptio) – the Earliest Preserved Map in Slovenian Archival Institutions |Author Arhiv Republike Slovenije

The Archives of the Republic of Slovenia holds approximately 3,200 items in its cartographic collection. We are especially proud to be the custodians of what is believed to be the oldest map preserved in any Slovenian archival institutions. The map was compiled by Joannes Sambucus and was first published in the 1573 Latin edition of Abraham Ortelius’ atlas. It is an important source for the study of historical geography of the region between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea in the second half of the 16th century.
