President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that true independence cannot be achieved through economic growth and infrastructural development alone, stressing that a nation must remain anchored in its core values and return to its authentic identity.

The President made the remarks during his appearance on Nation Chat, a podcast produced by Public Service Media (PSM).

Reflecting on the nation's past, President Dr Muizzu said Maldivians were once known for their mutual respect and exemplary moral values. He noted that unless the country reconnects with those foundations, even the greatest economic and infrastructural achievements would fall short of delivering genuine independence, as the nation's true identity would have been compromised.

The President further emphasised that material progress alone does not equate to genuine freedom. He said that no matter how many buildings are constructed or how much economic advancement is achieved, true independence cannot be realised without preserving the values that define the Maldivian people.

President Dr Muizzu observed that the decline in the culture of respect and good conduct began during a period of political division. He said certain political figures had deliberately undermined the spirit of mutual respect for political advantage. Stressing that politics should serve to improve the nation and benefit its people, the President said sincerity, respect and good manners should never be sacrificed in pursuit of political objectives.

The President added that past mistakes can be rectified and said his Administration is leading efforts to restore these values. Highlighting the Government's national campaign to promote respect, he said the initiative is not simply a campaign but a nationwide movement that requires the active participation of every citizen.

He also highlighted the Administration's key policies aimed at building a resilient and capable younger generation. These include the National Service programme, expanding access to education, and creating greater opportunities for young people to pursue careers in vocational and technical fields.

President Dr Muizzu further announced that advisory councils to provide recommendations on national affairs are expected to be established within the next three months. In addition, the President shared plans to establish a Youth Parliament and outlined initiatives to further empower young people and women within the legal framework, helping to build a stronger future for the Maldives.

The President also discussed the Maldives 2.0 digitalisation initiative, which aims to eliminate corruption and deliver efficient, citizen-centred public services. Reaffirming the project's core objectives, he stressed that no individual or entity with a state interest would be excluded or sidelined from participating in the initiative.

Concluding his remarks, President Dr Muizzu reflected on the recent internal elections of the governing People's National Congress (PNC) and shared his vision for the party's future. He expressed confidence that the party's congress, scheduled for September this year, would serve as a clear demonstration of the strength of internal democracy within the party.
