As part of his three-day official visit to Ghana, the President of Gabon, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, laid a wreath at the tomb of former Ghanaian President Jerry John Rawlings on Thursday.

The Gabonese leader, himself a former military officer, visited the final resting place of the late Head of State to pay homage to a leader he described as a central figure and guiding light in his own political journey.

Addressing journalists after the ceremony, President Nguema stated that the legacy of President Rawlings served as a major inspiration for his actions in ending Gabon’s 55-year Bongo family dynasty, adding that the late Ghanaian leader remains his primary role model in the fight against corruption and bad governance.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Yaa Asantewaa Agyeman-Rawlings expressed deep appreciation to President Nguema for honouring her late father. She noted that the gesture underscores the enduring diplomatic and fraternal ties between Ghana and Gabon, while also thanking the Government of Ghana for its continued dedication to preserving President Rawlings’ legacy.

The solemn ceremony was attended by members of the Agyeman-Rawlings family, including his children Kimathi, Yaa Asantewaa, and Amina. Also present were the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) of the Ghana Armed Forces, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, senior military officers, and members of the visiting Gabonese delegation.
