Damascus, July 30 (SANA)The National Commission for Transitional Justice, in cooperation with Impunity Watch and theGlobal Victims Network INOVAS, held in-depth discussion sessions on victim participation in transitional justice processes and the mechanisms needed to ensure justice for victims and the restoration of their rights.In a statement posted on its Telegram channel on Wednesday, the commission said the sessions underscored the pivotal role of victims intransitional justiceand the importance of ensuring their meaningful participation at all stages of the process.The discussions focused on documenting victims’ testimonies and their role in uncovering the truth about violations, preserving national memory, supporting accountability and reparations efforts, and drawing lessons to prevent the recurrence of violations and pass them on to future generations.The sessions addressed mechanisms for victim participation and witness protection, as well as ways to safeguard victims’ dignity, rights and privacy and protect them from any form of exploitation they may face while participating in transitional justice processes.Participants discussed the commission’s obligations toward victims and the importance of building a relationship based on transparency and mutual respect to ensure their safe and effective participation in its activities and programs.Syria has been working since Dec. 8, 2024, to develop the institutional framework for the transitional justice process.On May 17, 2025, President Ahmad al-Sharaa issued Decree No. 20 establishing the National Commission for Transitional Justice as an independent body with legal personality and financial and administrative autonomy, with a mandate to carry out its duties throughout Syrian territory.Since its establishment, the commission has continued its work at the governmental, societal and international levels as part of a process aimed at uncovering the truth, consolidating the principles of justice and accountability, providing reparations and preventing the recurrence of violations.
