Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien has announced the appointment of Gerard Ryan as Chairperson of the board of Bus Átha Cliath (Dublin Bus), and Board Member of Córas Iompair Éireann for a period of six months beginning 3 September 2026, while a publicjobs recruitment process is carried out.

The appointment to Bus Átha Cliath was made in advance of the stepping down of the current chairperson, Gary Owens. Following appointment by the Minister, Government appointed Gerard Ryan to the Board of Córas Iompair Éireann under the Transport (Reorganisation of Córas Iompair Éireann) Act of 1986.

Córas Iompair Éireann (“CIÉ”) is a statutory corporation established pursuant to theTransport Act 1950. CIÉ has three transport operating subsidiary companies in Ireland (collectively the “OpCos") – Bus Átha Cliath, Bus Éireann and Iarnród Éireann – as well as another subsidiary CIÉ Tours International Inc (“CIE Tours”) which provides coach tour holidays (collectively “CIÉGroup”).

CIÉ and its OpCos operate under the aegis of the Department of Transport in relation to the provision of public transport. The functions of CIÉ and each of the OpCos are provided for in legislation and are as prescribed by the Minister and the Department of Transport from time to time. Each OpCo is controlled through its own Board of Directors, which provide strategic leadership and direction for the companies. The respective Chairpersons of the OpCos are also members of the Board of CIÉ and are appointed by Government to the Board of CIÉ.

Bus Átha Cliath, or Dublin Bus, is a commercial State body established pursuant to theTransport (Re-Organisation of Córas Iompair Éireann) Act 1986and formed and registered under the Companies Acts. The company is a subsidiary of CIÉ and is represented on the Board of CIÉ by its Chairperson. CIÉ and its subsidiaries, including Dublin Bus, operate under the aegis of the Department of Transport.
