LVV brengt Witches’ Broom Disease in Para in kaart
The Para district of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (LVV) recently conducted a cassava survey in the indigenous villages of Pikin Saron and Bigi Poika. With this inventory, LVV maps the presence of the Witches' Broom Disease (WBD) in cassava crops, so that the spread of this harmful disease can be identified and tackled in a timely manner.
During the field visits, cassava plots were carefully inspected for symptoms of WBD. In addition, residents have been provided with information about recognizing the disease and the importance of timely reporting and appropriate measures. Early detection can limit further spread and better protect the production of one of Surinamese most important food crops.
To also provide practical support to the affected communities, LVV has handed over sweet potato plant material to the residents. This crop provides a valuable alternative to degraded or lost cassava plantations and contributes to food security while allowing farmers to continue their agricultural activities.

Het ressort Para van het ministerie van Landbouw, Veeteelt en Visserij (LVV) heeft onlangs een cassavesurvey uitgevoerd in de inheemse dorpen Pikin Saron en Bigi Poika. Met deze inventarisatie brengt LVV de aanwezigheid van de Witches’ Broom Disease (WBD) in cassavegewassen in kaart, zodat de verspreiding van deze schadelijke ziekte tijdig kan worden gesignaleerd en aangepakt. Tijdens de veldbezoeken zijn cassavepercelen zorgvuldig geïnspecteerd op symptomen van WBD. Daarnaast zijn de bewoners voorzien van voorlichting over het herkennen van de ziekte en het belang van tijdige melding en passende maatregelen. Door vroegtijdige signalering kan verdere verspreiding worden beperkt en wordt de productie van één van Surinames belangrijkste voedselgewassen beter beschermd. Om de getroffen gemeenschappen ook praktisch te ondersteunen, heeft LVV zoete bataatplantmateriaal overhandigd aan de bewoners. Dit gewas biedt een waardevol alternatief voor aangetaste of verloren cassaveaanplant en draagt bij aan de voedselzekerheid, terwijl boeren hun landbouwactiviteiten kunnen voortzetten.
