Gobierno lanza el programa “Embajadores STEM” para impulsar el talento que demandará la economía del futuro
Santo Domingo.- With the aim of expanding the capabilities of young people in areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs (MICM) and the Ministry of Education (Minerd) launched the “STEM Ambassadors” program, which seeks to prepare young talent to guide them towards strategic sectors that have high growth potential for new jobs.
The launch was led by ministers Yayo Sanz Lovatón and Luis Miguel De Camps.
When presenting the program, Sanz Lovatón stated that his commitment is to seek the necessary tools for industries, businesses and MSMEs to develop to face the new challenges that the world presents and that this is done through the preparation that young people must have with STEM careers.
He also said that, with the leadership of President Luis Abinader, led by his work team, and especially by Minister Luis Miguel De Camps, this initiative essentially seeks to ensure that high school graduates have the ability to innovate their production processes.
He explained that the Dominican Republic is experiencing a historic opportunity to consolidate itself as a strategic destination for investment, driven by nearshoring, the reconfiguration of global value chains and the projected economic growth of 4.5% by 2026, the highest in Latin America.
For his part, Luis Miguel De Camps expressed that the strengthening of STEM capabilities is part of a broader policy of educational innovation.
“Our National Digital Education Strategy, with an emphasis on computational thinking and artificial intelligence, seeks to integrate these capabilities into the curriculum, teacher training and learning experiences,” he highlighted.
The Vice Minister of Free Zones and Special Regimes, Lucía Zorrilla, presented the program and stated that it was born with a very clear purpose: to bring young people closer to the opportunities offered by science, technology, engineering and mathematics, in addition to strengthening the connection between education and the productive sector.
The STEM Ambassadors program emerged through the report STEM in the DR: Education for innovation and growth, published by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs (MICM) in 2024.
In response to this challenge, the program is conceived as a strategic initiative of the MICM, aimed at encouraging 5th and 6th grade high school students to learn about, be interested in, and consider STEM careers. To this end, motivational talks, question and answer sessions and other awareness-raising activities will be held, given by practicing professionals who will act as STEM Ambassadors, sharing their academic and professional experiences.
The first MICM STEM Talent Report confirmed that the main challenge is the availability of talent and also detailed that only 14% of university graduates belong to STEM areas, gender gaps persist and there is a high territorial concentration of talent.
In a six-month pilot phase, the program includes the training of 100 STEM Ambassadors, with an estimated reach of 200 educational centers in the provinces of Santo Domingo and Santiago, in coordination with allies from the public and private sectors.
Importance of STEM careers
STEM careers (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, in Spanish) are vital because they drive global innovation, solve complex challenges such as climate change and health, and offer high employability with competitive salaries in an increasingly digitalized and automated labor market.
STEM Ambassadors is a country commitment, aligned with Decree 588-20 and Goal 2036, which connects students with professionals who currently work in the industry, bringing them closer to real opportunities for professional development. More than a vocational guidance program, it is a strategy to build the talent that the country will demand in the coming years.
Present at the presentation were Ancell Scheker, Vice Minister of Technical and Pedagogical Affairs of Minerd; José Alejandro Aybar, Chancellor of the University of the Caribbean (Unicaribe), and Johannes Kelner, Director of the National Council of Export Free Zones (CNZFE). En respuesta a este desafío, el programa se concibe como una iniciativa estratégica del MICM, orientada amotivar a estudiantesde 5.º y 6.º de secundaria aconocer, interesarse y considerarcarreras STEM.
