The President of the Republic, José Antonio Kast, received this Thursday at the La Moneda Palace the President of the Republic of Korea, Lee Jae Myung, who made an official visit to Chile with the First Lady, Kim Hea Kyung, and a delegation of authorities from his country. The day included a welcome ceremony, a private meeting between both leaders, an extended meeting with the official delegations, the signing of agreements, a joint statement before the media and an official lunch. During the meetings, the Presidents addressed the strengthening of the Strategic Partnership between Chile and Korea, founded on shared democratic values, respect for international law, the promotion of open trade, innovation and international cooperation. Both governments highlighted the opportunities to deepen joint work in areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, biotechnology, astronomy, energy and mobility of researchers. They also analyzed cooperation in public and maritime security to confront drug trafficking, illegal fishing and transnational organized crime. In the ceremony held in the Patio de Las Camelias, five memorandums of understanding were signed in matters of mining cooperation, public security, maritime security, Antarctic research and promotion of investments and trade. The agreements were signed between the National Mining Company, ENAMI, and the Korea Rehabilitation and Mineral Resources Corporation; the Investigative Police of Chile and the National Police of Korea; DIRECTEMAR and the Korean Coast Guard; the Chilean Antarctic Institute and the Korean Polar Research Institute, and between InvestChile and the Korean Trade and Investment Promotion Agency. The leaders also highlighted Antarctic cooperation and the role of Punta Arenas as a gateway to the white continent, as well as the tenth anniversary of the Chile-Korea Antarctic Cooperation Center. Likewise, they reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to the protection of the oceans. Chile and Korea will co-organize the Fourth United Nations Ocean Conference in 2028, an event aimed at strengthening international cooperation for the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources. Chile and Korea have maintained diplomatic relations since 1962 and a Strategic Partnership since 2022. The bilateral Free Trade Agreement, in force since 2004, was the first trade agreement of this type signed by Korea and the first between countries in Asia and Latin America. By 2025, bilateral trade reached US$6,991 million. Chilean exports totaled US$5,187 million, while imports from Korea reached US$1,804 million.
