La Paz, July 30 (SANA)Bolivia‘s Public Prosecutor’s Office issued an arrest warrant Wednesday for former President Evo Morales on charges of “incitement and rebellion” linked to protests over the country’s economic crisis and the government of President Rodrigo Paz.

Agence France-Presse quoted Attorney General Roger Mariaca as saying the warrant was issued as part of an investigation into dozens of roadblocks erected during widespread protests in May and June. The roadblocks caused severe shortages of fuel, food and medical supplies, according to the report.

Mariaca said the investigation began following a complaint filed by a group of civic leaders and businesspeople and was later backed by the government.

He added that the allegations against Morales also include “armed rebellion” and “terrorism.”

Morales vowed not to bow to pressure, saying in a post on X: “They will not intimidate us. They are seeking to blame us for the social unrest to conceal Bolivia’s real tragedy: the deep social and economic crisis.”

Morales, Bolivia’s first Indigenous president, is currently based in his political stronghold in the Chapare region. He faces other allegations that he denies, while his supporters describe them as politically motivated.

President Rodrigo Paz had announced plans to launch a security operation in the region after declaring a state of emergency and deploying military forces to prevent demonstrations.

The protest movement began with demands raised by workers and Indigenous communities over what the source described asBolivia’s worst economic crisisin decades. It later expanded to include calls for Paz’s resignation.
