Damascus, July 30 (SANA)Syria has received more than 2.5 million tons of wheat from this season’s harvest, theSyrian Grain Establishment (SGE)said, as the government seeks to strengthen domesticfood securityand expandgrainreserves.

Director General of the SGEHassan al-Othmansaid the volume collected reflects improved wheat production compared with previous years and supports the country’s efforts to achieve greater self-sufficiency.

According to SGE data as of July 12, 2026,Hasakahaccounted for the largest share of wheat receipts with 907,249 tons, followed by Raqqa with 341,440 tons, Aleppo with 262,045 tons, Hama with 179,306 tons, Deir Ezzor with 131,458 tons, Daraa with 84,472 tons, Idlib with 81,829 tons, Homs with 56,295 tons, Damascus with 19,880 tons, Tartous with 7,036 tons, and Latakia with 5,744 tons.

Hasakah accounted for nearly half of the wheat collected during the reporting period.

The increase in wheat receipts follows earlier expectations of a larger harvest due to improved rainfall and weather conditions. On June 19, 2026,Ahmed Jalal al-Ahmad, Director of Agricultural Affairs and Plant Protection at the Ministry of Agriculture, told Reuters that 2026 wheat production was expected at 2.3–2.5 million tons, compared with around 900,000 tons in 2025, with the return of the eastern region contributing significantly to the increase.

Al-Othman said preparations for the harvest included mobilizing available resources and operating 84 collection centers to facilitate deliveries and reduce logistical burdens on farmers.

He added that storage facilities, including silos, sub-silos, warehouses and open storage yards, had been rehabilitated and equipped to increase storage capacity and accommodate incoming wheat deliveries.

Al-Othman also highlighted the reopening of the Adra silo in Damascus countryside after rehabilitation, describing it as a major addition to Syria’s grain storage capacity. The facility, the country’s largest silo, can store up to 200,000 tons of wheat.

The SGE said it continues receiving wheat deliveries from farmers across the country while expanding storage capacity through the rehabilitation of silos and approved collection centers to help ensure stable flour supplies for bakeries.

Assistant Director GeneralAhmad Qadounsaid the establishment had milled more than one million tons of wheat during the first half of the year, helping maintain flour supplies to public and private bakeries nationwide.

Deliveries slow in Hasakah after harvest ends

Wheat deliveries continue at SGE collection centers in Hasakah, although the daily pace has slowed following the completion of harvesting operations across the province.

Branch directorAbdul Hamid Daoudtold SANA that wheat deliveries reached 1.046 million tons by July 19, collected through 21 reception centers, including silos, sub-silos and open storage yards.

Daily deliveries have fallen to around 15,000 tons, compared with about 30,000 tons in previous weeks, after harvesting concluded across most cultivated areas.

Daoud said some collection centers have reached full storage capacity, while deliveries to others have declined. However, several centers continue receiving wheat from farmers, particularly the al-Milbiya center south of Hasakah city and the al-Tawarij center in Qamishli.

To facilitate deliveries, the SGE opened additional bulk wheat collection centers at warehouses in al-Dirbasiyah, Amuda and the Qamishli countryside, helping ease pressure on existing facilities and speed up the procurement process.
