Brussels, July 30 (SANA)TheEuropean Unionon Thursday announced an additional €3.47 billion in military support forUkrainewhile condemning overnightRussian strikesthat Ukrainian officials said killed eight people and injured dozens.

TheEuropean Commissionsaid the new funding will finance the purchase of drones, missiles, air defense systems and Gripen fighter jets as part of a broader €90 billion support program for Ukraine.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the funding aims to strengthenUkraine’s defense capabilities, protect its airspace and expand cooperation between the European and Ukrainian defense industries.

The Commission said additional funding packages for ammunition and air defense systems are expected to be approved in the coming weeks. It also plans to allocate €28.3 billion in 2026 to strengthen Ukraine’s defense industrial capacity as part of a broader package that includes financial assistance to help maintain public services and support the resilience of the Ukrainian economy.

According to the Commission, the European Union and its member states have provided more than €220 billion in financial, military and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war.

Separately, European Council President António Costa condemned Russia’s latest overnight attacks on Ukraine, saying they also violated Polish airspace.

In a post on X, Costa said the incident underscored that “Russia‘s aggression poses a threat to the security of Europe as a whole.” He added that the EU was closely monitoring developments and stood in full solidarity with the Ukrainian and Polish authorities.

Costa said the bloc continues to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses, including anti-missile and counter-drone capabilities.

Earlier on Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said eight people were killed and dozens injured in a large-scale Russian attack targeting several regions of Ukraine overnight.
