Cairo, July 30 (SANA)Egyptsaid on Thursday that a drone caused fires aboard two vessels atDamietta Porton the Mediterranean coast, according to preliminary findings from an official investigation.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the Egyptian Cabinet said authorities had concluded that the fires, which broke out on Wednesday, were caused by a drone after initial investigations.

No group has claimed responsibility for the incident, the statement said. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and will take “the necessary measures to safeguard Egypt’s interests and national security.”

Maritime security firm Ambrey said earlier that aU.S.-ownedliquefied natural gas(LNG) carrier was struck while docked at Damietta Port, assessing that the incident was caused by a drone. The company did not identify who may have been responsible or provide details on the extent of the damage.

Separately, port services provider Inchcape Shipping Services reported that fires had broken out aboard two gas carriers inside the port.

The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions and follows a series of attacks affecting maritime security in theMiddle East, raising concerns over the safety ofshippingroutes and global energy supplies.
