The Government of Ghana has announced plans to hold a state funeral for the late Ambassador James Victor Gbeho, a celebrated statesman whose decades of service spanned both national and international diplomacy.

The funeral, organised in collaboration with the Gbeho and related families, is scheduled to take place at the forecourt of the State House on Friday, 31 July, 2026.

The announcement was made by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP, Spokesperson to the President and Minister of State for Government Communications, who described the late ambassador as “one of Ghana’s most distinguished statesmen.”

Ambassador Gbeho built an illustrious career within Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, rising steadily through the ranks over the course of his public service. He served successively as Chief Director, Deputy Minister, and ultimately as Minister for Foreign Affairs, playing a pivotal role in shaping the country’s diplomatic policy during his tenure.

His influence extended well beyond Ghana’s borders. Ambassador Gbeho served as a Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General in Somalia, contributing to international peace and stability efforts in the region. He later assumed the presidency of the ECOWAS Commission, further cementing his legacy as a champion of regional cooperation and diplomacy across West Africa.

In the statement, the Government of Ghana extended its deepest condolences to the Gbeho family, acknowledging the profound loss felt not only by his loved ones but by the nation as a whole.

The state funeral is expected to draw dignitaries, diplomats, and public figures from across Ghana and the international community, reflecting the widespread respect and admiration Ambassador Gbeho earned throughout his distinguished career.
