Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne TD, today welcomedGovernment approvalfor the allocation of €2 billion in capital funding to Uisce Éireann under the National Development Plan.

€1.7 billion of the funding will be allocated to Uisce Éireann’s Growth and Investment programme, which provides water services to unlock housing capacity to meet the Government’s ambitious new targets underDelivering Homes, Building Communities 2025-2030.

"Water and wastewater services are critical to the delivery of homes. We won't get housing delivery moving at the pace and at scale we need without this infrastructure.

Today’s injection of €2 billion shows the Government’s commitment to ensuring all aspects of housing delivery are working together, so we can deliver on our ambitious housing action plan."

The funding is part of the record €11.7 billion allocated to Uisce Éireann under the current NDP and is being provided from the Central Fund to support the Government’s housing objectives.

€1.7 billion of the funding under Uisce Éireann’s Growth and Investment programme provides water services to unlock housing capacity to meet the Government’s ambitious new targets. Under the Growth and Investment programme, Uisce Éireann has identified 72 settlements across Ireland where the existing capacity of treatment plants can support significant development in the short term.

In addition, €300 million is being allocated under the Small Towns and Villages Programme, which targets to upgrade waste water treatment plants serving smaller population centres. Over 300 potential sites have been identified in consultation with Local Authorities, and works are progressing in 50 of them. Uisce Éireann is looking at further ways to expand the programme to reach more communities.
