Ghana and Gabon have agreed to strengthen economic relations, pursue mutual benefits, and utilise the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to promote industrial growth in both countries.

This agreement follows bilateral talks at the Presidency between President Mahama and President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, as part of his official visit to Ghana.

President Oligui Nguema arrived in Accra with a delegation of ministers, senior officials, and business leaders. President John Dramani Mahama welcomed him at the Accra International Airport, where he inspected a Guard of Honour by the Ghana Navy.

Two key agreements, an MoU on Political Consultations between the Foreign Affairs Ministries of the two countries, and an MoU on diplomatic training between Ghana’s Foreign Service Institute and Gabon’s Institute of Diplomatic Studies, were signed at the end of the talks.

A joint communique outlined further areas of cooperation, including plans to share expertise in responsible mining, gold and manganese value addition, petroleum exploration, and energy transition.

Ghana and Gabon also committed to enhancing agricultural cooperation, focusing on commercial farming, seed development, agro-processing, aquaculture, and joint action against illegal fishing.

The agreements cover twelve priority areas, with both governments instructing sector ministers to establish immediate operational frameworks for implementation.

In forestry and climate action, both countries will pursue joint carbon credit initiatives, combining Gabon’s expertise in rainforest conservation with Ghana’s climate resilience programs.

For maritime security and defence, both countries pledged to collaborate on ocean governance, intelligence sharing, and efforts to combat piracy and transnational crime in the Gulf of Guinea.

The partnership also includes university exchange programmes, joint English-French language training, and cooperation in digital transformation, cybersecurity, public health, pharmaceutical supply chains, and eco-tourism.

Beyond economic and sectoral cooperation, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
