EU condemns Iranian security forces assault on French diplomats, urges accountability
Brussels, July 29 (SANA)TheEuropean Unionhas strongly condemned an assault by Iranian security forces on twoFrench diplomatsat the French Embassy in Tehran on July 19, calling it a blatant violation of the Vienna Conventions and urging Iran to hold those responsible accountable.
In a statement published on the European Union’s website on Tuesday, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said that “actions of this kind constitute a blatant violation of the Vienna Conventions and endanger the entire framework of diplomatic relations.”
Kallas added that the European Union stands in solidarity with France and called onIranto hold those responsible for the assault accountable and to fulfill its international obligations.
On July 21, France summoned the Iranian chargé d’affaires to protest the detention of French Embassy staff in Tehran and their physical intimidation by Iranian security personnel. Paris demanded clarification of the circumstances surrounding the incident, accountability for those responsible, and guarantees for the safety and security of its diplomatic premises and personnel.
