Ireland expresses the deepest concern about the dangerous and escalating situation in the West Bank. As Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, I strongly condemn the intolerable violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers, which continues to escalate in an atmosphere of impunity. Extremist settler violence is terrorising Palestinian communities throughout the occupied West Bank, and has now spread to Area A.

Israel, as the occupying power, is obliged to protect the Palestinian civilian population under its control in the West Bank. There must be accountability and those responsible for the violence must be brought to justice. Settler attacks cannot be permitted to take place in an environment of impunity and should not be used as a pretext for intensified military operations targeting Palestinians.

Ireland also condemns the recent raid by Israeli forces on an UNRWA training centre in the West Bank. Respect for the privileges and immunities of the United Nations and for international humanitarian law is imperative.

The current situation undermines security in the West Bank and the region, and threatens prospects for a lasting peace.

I believe the EU must take more concrete action in response to this unacceptable situation before it deteriorates further.
