The President of the Republic of Cyprus met with the United Nations Secretary-General, in Lefkosia

Commitment towards finding a solution to the Cyprus problem was expressed by the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, Mr António Guterres, during his meeting today, 28 July 2026, with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, at the Presidential Palace in Lefkosia.

In welcoming the UN Secretary-General, the President of the Republic of Cyprus said: “We are very glad to have you here. It is another clear indication of your commitment to the solution of the Cyprus problem based on the UN Security Council resolutions and I am looking forward to our discussions, to our deliberations.

We need good news in Cyprus. We need good news in the region. We need good news at an international level and we count on your support and on your political commitment, especially in these very challenging times at an international level, where we also see the actions of certain actors that undermine the international system that was established following World War II. And we have, all of us, responsibility to do whatever is necessary in order for international law, international values and principles to be upheld. So once again, welcome, and I am very glad to have you here”.

For his part the UN Secretary-General said, inter alia: “This is a visit of solidarity and humility and the visit is with the objective to support the two Cypriot communities in order to find a solution, having full conscience that a solution for Cyprus will have, not only a very positive impact for Cyprus, but will be extremely useful in the context of a very difficult situation in the region. And you can count on my total commitment, with humility, because it is not for me to teach to anybody whatever should be done, but with humility, I am here with total commitment to support your efforts”.

Speaking to journalists as he departed the Presidential Palace following his meeting with President Christodoulides, the UN Secretary-General said: “This visit is of solidarity to the people of Cyprus and to show my strong commitment to make sure that we are able to have finally the solution in Cyprus.

It obviously depends on the Cypriots themselves, also the guarantors, they have a role to play, but I will do everything I can to support the Greek and Turkish Cypriots in this very important moment”.
