President reaffirms Maldives' commitment to Islamic solidarity as nation marks 50 years of OIC membership26 July 2026
His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives' commitment to strengthening solidarity among Member States of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), as the nation commemorates the 50th anniversary of its membership in the Organisation.
In his message on the occasion, the President reflected on the enduring role of the OIC in fostering unity among Muslim nations and strengthening collective resilience to safeguard the Muslim Ummah from evolving global challenges. He noted that half a century on, the need to address the concerns of the global Muslim community remains as urgent as ever, underscoring the continued relevance and importance of the Organisation in today's world.
The President recalled that the OIC welcomed the Maldives' membership on 20 July 1976, less than a decade after the Organisation's establishment, marking the beginning of a partnership founded on mutual respect for sovereignty, solidarity, and support for the development of Member States.
President Dr Muizzu highlighted the Maldives' active contributions to the work of the OIC over the past five decades through its participation in Islamic Summits, the Council of Foreign Ministers, and other high-level forums. He noted the invaluable contributions of Maldivian diplomats in advancing discussions on issues of shared importance, including climate resilience, women's empowerment, Islamic finance, and the revitalisation of the Organisation's work.
The President observed that the partnership between the Maldives and the OIC extends beyond a traditional alliance, with the Islamic values and commitment to justice embodied by the Organisation resonating deeply with the Maldivian people. He affirmed that this is reflected in the Maldives' steadfast advocacy for the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people and its continued call for accountability and justice for the Rohingya Muslims and other Muslim communities across the globe.
Concluding his message, the President reaffirmed the Maldives' commitment to advancing the Organisation's objectives and strengthening solidarity among Member States, while underscoring the need for practical, timely, and effective solutions to the challenges facing the Muslim world today.
