Olabi: Guterres’ visit to Damascus reflects international interest in Syria

Damascus, July 25 (SANA)Syria’s Permanent Representative to theUnited Nations,Ibrahim Olabi, affirmed that the historic visit of UN Secretary‑GeneralAntónio Guterresto Damascus reflects the international organization interest inSyria‘s achievements and its keenness on following the new phase the country is witnessing.

Olabi told SANA on Saturday that Guterres is visiting Damascus at the invitation of the Syrian government.

He added that Guterres wished to acknowledge what Syria has accomplished, describing it as a “success story before the world,” something he observes daily from his office at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

He pointed out that the visit is not limited to its symbolic dimension, but also includes files that directly affect the lives of Syrians.

He noted that Guterres’ discussions with Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan Al‑Shaibani addressed issues of recovery, the situation in the camps, and the transition from humanitarian assistance to development support, in a manner that contributes to attracting investments and enhancing openness to the international community.

The meeting also touched on Israeli violations in Syrian territories, Olabi added.

He explained that the visit carries practical, political, and symbolic dimensions, especially as it is the first visit by a UN Secretary‑General to Syria in years, reflecting the importance of the phase the country is undergoing and the growing international interest in it.
