Sistema ferroviário eléctrico: Presidente Chapo quer replicar modelo tanzaniano no país
MAPUTO, MAY 9, 2025– The President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, expressed this Thursday, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, his enthusiasm for the Standard Gauge railway project, a modern electric train line, considering it an inspiring example for the countries of Southern Africa. He made these statements after a visit to the railway's Main Station, where the Head of State was accompanied by the First Lady, Gueta Selemane Chapo.
“It's a good impression, we think these are very important projects for the development of our region”, stated the official, highlighting the impact of the Tanzanian railway project on mobility, security and economic dynamism.
The President of the Republic also highlighted that the initiative, started during the presidency of John Pombe Magufuli, aims to integrate countries in the region, going beyond national borders.
During the tour through the station, the statesman highlighted that the electric railway allows the population to travel in “perfect conditions”, highlighting aspects such as safety, speed and relief from road traffic. “The level of the roads is not the same as that of the electric train, which is why we also think it is a very important project for the development of the country, the cities and boosting the economy”, he stated.
When asked about the possibility of Mozambique adopting a similar solution, the Head of Government was peremptory: “Yes, we are already working on this project”.
Furthermore, he also recalled that the initiative is already public knowledge and has been followed with expectation. “You have already heard […] that we are working at full steam to see if we can start to materialize the project”, he said, reiterating the Government's commitment to advancing modern solutions to the challenges of urban mobility.
Pragmatically, the government official admitted that the project could begin in a pilot phase, focusing on the Greater Maputo region. “It may not start with a national dimension right away, but at least Greater Maputo, solving the transport problems in Greater Maputo”, he explained. The connection between Maputo, Matola and Marracuene was identified as a priority to alleviate traffic in the capital.
“We believe that in the first phase the issue related to the Maputo-Matola, Maputo-Marracuene connection is quite important to decongest traffic at the level of the country's capital, a project of this type and of this size”, concluded the Mozambican President, highlighting the Executive's long-term vision to modernize the transport infrastructure. On the same day, the President of the Republic visited the Historical Center for African Liberation, an institution that preserves the memory of the struggles for independence on the continent. President Chapo's participation in this activity symbolized the strengthening of historical and political ties between Mozambique and Tanzania, on the eve of the end of his official visit to the neighboring country.

Fez estas declarações após uma visita à Estação Principal da ferrovia, onde o Chefe do Estado se fez acompanhar pela Primeira-Dama, Gueta Selemane Chapo. “É uma boa impressão, nós achamos que são projectos bastante importantes para o desenvolvimento da nossa região”, afirmou o governante, sublinhando o impacto do projecto ferroviário tanzaniano na mobilidade, segurança e dinamização económica. O Presidente da República sublinhou ainda que a iniciativa, iniciada durante a presidência de John Pombe Magufuli, visa integrar os países da região, ultrapassando as fronteiras nacionais. Durante o percurso pela estação, o estadista realçou que a ferrovia eléctrica permite à população viajar em “perfeitas condições”, destacando aspectos como a segurança, rapidez e o alívio do tráfego rodoviário. “O nível das estradas não é o mesmo nível de comboio eléctrico, daí que também achamos que é um projecto bastante importante para o desenvolvimento do país, das cidades e dinamizar a economia”, afirmou. Instado sobre a possibilidade de Moçambique adoptar uma solução semelhante, o Chefe do Governo foi peremptório: “Sim, nós já estamos a trabalhar neste projecto”. Ademais, também recordou que a iniciativa já é de conhecimento público e tem sido acompanhada com expectativa. “Já ouviram […] que nós estamos a trabalhar a todo o gás para vermos se começamos a materializar o projecto”, disse, reiterando o compromisso do Governo em avançar com soluções modernas para os desafios de mobilidade urbana. De forma pragmática, o governante admitiu que o projecto poderá iniciar-se em fase piloto, com foco na região do Grande Maputo. “Pode não começar de dimensão nacional logo à primeira, mas pelo menos o Grande Maputo, resolver os problemas de transporte no Grande Maputo”, explicou. A ligação entre Maputo, Matola e Marracuene foi apontada como prioritária para aliviar o trânsito na capital. “Achamos que na primeira fase a questão relacionada com a ligação de Maputo-Matola, Maputo-Marracuene é bastante importante para descongestionar o trânsito ao nível da capital do país, um projecto deste género e desta dimensão”, concluiu o Presidente moçambicano, evidenciando a visão de longo prazo do Executivo para modernizar a infra-estrutura de transporte. Ainda no mesmo dia, o Presidente da República visitou o Centro Histórico da Libertação Africana, uma instituição que preserva a memória das lutas pela independência no continente. A participação do Presidente Chapo nesta actividade simbolizou o reforço dos laços históricos e políticos entre Moçambique e a Tanzânia, na véspera do encerramento da sua visita oficial ao país vizinho.
