Director del Intrant expone ante la ONU acciones de República Dominicana para reducir mortalidad por accidentes de tránsito
United States.-The Dominican Republic reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of life and the reduction of traffic accidents during the High Level Meeting on Road Safety of the United Nations General Assembly, where the executive director of the National Institute of Traffic and Land Transportation (Intrant) Milton Morrison, presented the main actions promoted by the Dominican Government to face this challenge.
During his speech, Morrison expressed the country's support for the declaration approved by the General Assembly and highlighted that road safety constitutes a national priority, supported by public policies, institutional alliances and investments aimed at preserving the lives of citizens.
The official reported that, during the year 2025, some 2,992 people died in traffic accidents in the Dominican Republic, of which more than 65% were motorcyclists, a reality that has motivated the implementation of specific measures to reduce that number.
In that sense, he announced that the country is developing technical regulations for approved helmets, with the aim of guaranteeing that only helmets certified with international safety standards enter the national territory. Likewise, he explained that they are working to ensure that no motorcycle is marketed without a certified helmet, under the “One motorcycle, one helmet” initiative.
Morrison also highlighted that President Luis Abinader promoted the signing of the National Pact for Road Safety, signed by 121 public and private institutions, as part of a national strategy supported by the National Road Safety Plan 2025-2030, which coordinates joint actions to reduce accidents on the roads.
As part of the preventive approach, he reported that, in coordination with the Ministry of Education, the Traffic Culture program was launched, through which all high school students will receive virtual training in road safety, with the goal of training 300,000 young people by 2028.
In terms of infrastructure, he highlighted the approval of a road safety program by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), which contemplates an investment of 200 million dollars to strengthen the conditions of the road network and contribute to the reduction of traffic accidents.
At the conclusion of his participation, Morrison emphasized that road safety transcends the responsibility of governments and requires the commitment of society, academia and the private sector, which is why the Dominican Republic promotes the implementation of road safety plans in companies.
“From the Dominican Republic we reaffirm our commitment to this global agenda, acting decisively and placing the protection of life at the center of each public policy,” the official expressed before the United Nations General Assembly.

Asimismo, explicó que se trabaja para que ninguna motocicleta sea comercializada sin un casco certificado, bajo lainiciativa “Una moto, un casco”. Morrison destacó, además, queel presidente Luis Abinaderimpulsó la firmadel Pacto Nacional por la Seguridad Vial, suscrito por121 instituciones públicas y privadas, como parte de una estrategia nacional respaldada por elPlan Nacional de Seguridad Vial 2025-2030,que coordina acciones conjuntas para reducir la siniestralidad en las carreteras. Como parte delenfoque preventivo,informó que, en coordinación con elMinisterio de Educación, se puso en marcha elprograma Cultura del Tránsito, mediante el cual todos los estudiantes de bachillerato recibiránformación virtual en seguridad vial, con la meta de capacitar a300,000 jóvenes para el año 2028. En materia de infraestructura, resaltó la aprobación de un programa de seguridad vial por parte del Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo(BID),que contempla una inversión de200 millones de dólarespara fortalecer las condiciones de lared vialy contribuir a ladisminución de los accidentes de tránsito. Al concluir su participación, Morrison enfatizó quela seguridad vial trasciende la responsabilidad de los gobiernosy requiere el compromiso dela sociedad, la academia y el sector privado, por lo que la República Dominicana promueve la implementación deplanes de seguridad vial en las empresas. “Desde la República Dominicana reafirmamos nuestro compromiso con esta agenda global, actuando con decisión y colocando la protección de la vida en el centro de cada política pública”,expresó el funcionario ante la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas.
