Non-Resident Ambassador of Portugal presents credentials to the President23 July 2026
The Non-Resident Ambassador of Portugal to the Maldives, His Excellency João Manuel Mendes Ribeiro de Almeida, presented his Letter of Credence to His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at a ceremony held this morning at the President's Office.
The Ambassador was escorted in a traditional 'Haiykolhu' cultural procession, accompanied by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Drum and Trumpet Band.
The President accepted the Letter of Credence and formally welcomed His Excellency João Manuel Mendes Ribeiro de Almeida as the Ambassador of Portugal.
Following the ceremony, the President and the Ambassador held discussions on areas of mutual interest, including coordinated efforts to address climate change, promote tourism, and enhance multilateral cooperation. Both sides concluded by reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in the years to come.
Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Portugal were established on 9 February 1995.
