Manila, July 22 (SANA)– Canadian Foreign MinisterAnita Anandon Wednesday called for de-escalation and a permanent ceasefire in the Middle East, describing the situation as “extremely dangerous.”

Speaking on the sidelines of anASEANforeign ministers’ meeting in Manila, Anand said Canada continues to advocate for de-escalation, a ceasefire, and the protection of civilians amid the ongoing fighting in the region.

She expressed hope that the parties would return to negotiations and reach a lasting ceasefire agreement, while stressing the need to protect hospitals, schools, and other civilian infrastructure.

Anand also emphasized the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and upholding international law, particularly in key maritime routes including the Strait of Hormuz.

Separately, she said Canada is seeking to diversify its trade beyond theUnited Statesand is pursuing a free trade agreement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
