República Dominicana alcanza meta Hambre Cero, confirma la FAO

Santo Domingo.– The director general of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Qu Dongyu, reported that the Dominican Republic managed to reduce the prevalence of undernourishment below the international threshold that defines the condition of hunger, according to data published in the Report on the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI 2026).

“The Dominican Republic has moved below the 2.5% malnutrition threshold and off the hunger map,” Dongyu said.

"They are not small, nor big. But the only experience you can learn from the Dominican Republic is that your big or small size does not matter, but rather the strong political commitment of the president, the minister, the farmers and society to fight hunger together and with a reliable policy," he added.

During a press conference, President Luis Abinadera attributed the achievement to the joint efforts of farmers, rural women, farm workers, the private sector, academia, civil society, public institutions and international cooperation.

"Today, before concluding the period that we had set for ourselves, we can say with joy and humility that this commitment has been fulfilled. This is not the triumph of a government. It is the triumph of a country," the president stressed.

The head of State also thanked the technical support of the FAO, the World Food Program and the International Fund for Agricultural Development, in addition to warning that getting out of the condition of hunger "does not mean that our task is over," but rather opens a new stage focused on consolidating national production, family farming, water management, social protection and early warning systems against climate and geopolitical risks.

For his part, the Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza, who chairs the National Council for Food and Nutrition Sovereignty and Security (Conassan), participated virtually in the FAO activity where the news was announced. The official highlighted that the country reduced undernourishment to below 2.5% thanks to the inter-institutional coordination promoted since 2020 around five pillars: availability, access, food and nutrition, climate change and risk management, and governance.

"Few initiatives can be more timely, necessary and humane than guaranteeing the nutrition of our people. Fighting hunger is, in essence, an act of profound humanism," said the minister, who also chairs the Zero Hunger Roundtable, a permanent forum that identifies gaps and promotes joint solutions with international organizations.

In terms of production, national agriculture reached 347 million quintals in 2025, a growth of 5.6% compared to the previous year, driven by zero-rate agricultural financing, irrigation technology, the delivery of 167,000 property titles, mostly in rural areas, and public purchases from local producers, women, and small businesses. Paliza also highlighted that the average real income per person grew by 15.2% from 2019 to 2025, in the context of the lowest open unemployment rate recorded in the history of the country.

The minister detailed the strengthening of the main social programs linked to food security:

-The School Feeding Program, which benefits 2.1 million students daily.

- The Aliméntate program, which doubled its coverage to 1,490,000 beneficiary households.

-The Gas Bonus, which assists 1,300,000 homes and contributes to reducing deforestation.

-The Economic Kitchens, which went from 35 establishments in 2019 to 134 currently, and distribute 180,000 daily rations for free.

The fulfillment of the Zero Hunger goal marks a milestone in the recent history of the Dominican Republic and confirms that the coordination of public policies, social investment and the strengthening of national production can translate into concrete results for the population. Based on this achievement, the Dominican Government reaffirms its commitment to moving towards sustainable food security, guaranteeing that each Dominican has access to sufficient, nutritious and quality food, while strengthening the country's resilience in the face of future climate and economic challenges.
