The Office of Public Works (OPW) today announced that admission to heritage sites across the country will be free for all visitors under 18 throughout August 2026. The initiative aims to encourage young people and families to discover Ireland’s rich cultural and historical heritage, while helping to make these experiences more accessible by removing financial barriers. OPW heritage sites continue to play an important role as educational and cultural resources, offering visitors of all age’s opportunities to learn more about Ireland’s history, architecture and traditions.

Speaking about the initiative, Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Kevin “Boxer” Moran, said:“I am delighted that all under 18s will once again enjoy free entry to OPW heritage sites this August. Whether it’s exploring ancient monuments, visiting historic houses, taking part in interactive tours or discovering Ireland’s cultural heritage first-hand, this initiative offers young people a fun and memorable way to connect with history, nature and culture over the summer holidays.”

AtCastletown House, children and teenagers can explore one of Ireland’s grandest historic homes while enjoying a vibrant summer programme of music, exhibitions and cultural events designed to inspire curiosity and creativity.

Young explorers visitingGlebe Gallerycan discover the fascinating stories behind one of Ireland’s most beautiful regency houses, where newly conserved spaces mix heritage, art and interactive visitor experiences.

AtCarrowmore Megalithic Cemetery, young visitors can uncover the mysteries of Ireland’s oldest megalithic tombs through immersive exhibitions and engaging storytelling that bring prehistoric Ireland to life.

Barryscourt Castleoffers young visitors the opportunity to explore one of Ireland's finest restored medieval tower houses, discovering historic halls, gardens and the stories of life in a 15th-century stronghold.

AtEmo Court, younger visitors can experience the grandeur of one of Ireland's finest neo-classical mansions before exploring woodland walks, lakeside trails and beautifully maintained gardens.
