Proyecto Aña Cuá alcanza un 76% de ejecución y avanza hacia la ampliación de la capacidad energética del país
The President of the Republic, Santiago Peña, made a technical visit to the work area of the Aña Cuá hydroelectric project of the Yacyretá Binational Entity (EBY), in Ayolas, department of Misiones, where he verified the progress of one of the main energy infrastructure works promoted by the country. The Vice President of the Republic, Pedro Alliana, accompanied the tour; the executive director of the EBY, Luis Benítez; and the Minister of Public Works and Communications, Claudia Centurión.
During the visit, the authorities confirmed that the work is 76% complete and currently generates close to 1,000 jobs. The project contemplates the installation of three vertical axis Kaplan turbines, with a total installed capacity of 270 megawatts (MW), which will allow the use of an ecological flow of 1,500 m³/s of the Aña Cuá arm and increase the annual energy production of the Yacyretá Hydroelectric Plant by approximately 10%.
In statements to the press, the President highlighted the strategic value of the project for the country's energy future and pointed out that the continuity of the works was possible thanks to the efforts made to overcome the financial and contractual difficulties that affected its execution, allowing progress once again in an undertaking considered a priority for the national energy system.
«Today we can see a work that is advancing strongly and that represents an enormous opportunity for Paraguay. Energy is one of our greatest assets and we must manage it with a long-term vision," said the President.
Likewise, he highlighted that the development of the project responds to a policy aimed at strengthening the energy infrastructure and generating conditions to accompany the country's economic growth. "This is an investment that will allow us to make better use of our resources and continue building a Paraguay with greater development capacity," he stated.
The expansion of Aña Cuá does not require new flooding areas, since the turbined water returns to the natural channel of the Aña Cuá arm, maintaining its ecological conditions. The first generating unit is scheduled to come into operation in 2028, while the complete completion of the project is projected for 2029, consolidating a new increase in the renewable energy generation capacity of the Yacyretá Binational Entity.

La energía es uno de nuestros mayores activos y debemos administrarla con una visión de largo plazo», expresó el Mandatario. Asimismo, resaltó que el desarrollo del proyecto responde a una política orientada a fortalecer la infraestructura energética y generar condiciones para acompañar el crecimiento económico del país.«Esta es una inversión que permitirá aprovechar mejor nuestros recursos y seguir construyendo un Paraguay con mayor capacidad de desarrollo», afirmó. La ampliación de Aña Cuá no requiere nuevas áreas de inundación, ya que el agua turbinada retorna al cauce natural del brazo Aña Cuá, manteniendo sus condiciones ecológicas. Laprimera unidad generadoratiene prevista su entrada en operación en2028, mientras que la culminación integral del proyecto está proyectada para2029, consolidando un nuevo incremento en la capacidad de generación de energía renovable de la Entidad Binacional Yacyretá.
