Young man killed by landmine explosion in Damascus countryside
Damascus, July 17 (SANA)A young man in his twenties was killed on Friday afternoon when a landmine exploded as he was driving a truck loaded with vegetables along a dirt road southeast of the city of al-Dumayr in the Damascus countryside.
The blast occurred in an area still contaminated with landmines and unexploded ordnance left behind by the ousted regime.
Landmines and other explosiveremnants of warcontinue to pose a major threat across Syria, particularly in agricultural land, former frontlines and remote rural areas, where civilians are frequently killed or injured while farming, herding livestock or traveling.
Syrian Civil Defense and humanitarian organizations have repeatedly warned residents against entering suspected hazardous areas and have called for expanded mine clearance operations.
Despite ongoing clearance efforts, explosive remnants of war left behind by the ousted regime remain among the country’s deadliest long-term humanitarian threats.
