Presidente Abinader entrega blindado Furia VBD-2 y modernos equipos para reforzar la defensa nacional
Santo Domingo.–President Luis Abinader delivered this Friday five unmanned vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft, a mobile unit of an unmanned system installed on an all-terrain vehicle, 179 new vehicles, 10 Centauro tactical vehicles developed by the Dominican Military Industry, and the renovation and complete equipment of seven infrastructures at the San Isidro Air Base.
Likewise, the FURIA VBD-2 was presented, the most recent armored vehicle developed and assembled by the Dominican Military Industry, equipped with ballistic protection, 360-degree turret and advanced operational capabilities. This first unit is part of a production program of eighteen vehicles intended to strengthen the brigades deployed in the second line of defense of the land border.
These deliveries are part of the transformation and modernization process promoted by the Government to strengthen the operational, logistical and response capabilities of the Armed Forces of the Dominican Republic.
The completely renovated areas of the San Isid Air Base were carried out as part of strengthening the welfare of military personnel and include soldiers' barracks and officers' rooms from different units, the medical dispensary, transportation areas, the disciplinary room, cafeteria, beauty salon for the ladies, the enlisted pavilion of the Engineering Headquarters and the facilities of the Air Defense Squadron.
In the technological field, the Armed Forces incorporated 5 unmanned vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft, state-of-the-art platforms that will expand the surveillance, reconnaissance and monitoring capabilities of the national airspace thanks to their greater autonomy and time spent in flight.
Likewise, a new mobile unmanned system unit installed on an all-terrain vehicle was presented, designed to operate in remote or difficult-to-access areas and provide support during security operations and emergency response.
The modernization also includes the strengthening of military mobility through the incorporation of 179 new vehicles, distributed in 76 patrol vans, 25 trucks, 7 minibuses, 4 minivans and 67 motorcycles, intended to increase the logistical and operational capacity of the different units of the Armed Forces, reaching a total of 1,206 vehicles received since August 2020, as part of the process of renewal and strengthening of its fleet. vehicular.
One of the most relevant moments of the ceremony was the delivery of 10 units of the new Centauro tactical vehicle, developed and modified by the Dominican Military Industry (Indom), which will be incorporated into the Commando Battalion of the Army of the Dominican Republic to strengthen the mobility, protection and response capacity of the special forces units, which was developed on a Chevrolet Silverado truck, with a capacity for 12 soldiers, it has a 360-degree rotating armored turret, with a base for carry machine guns and a multiple grenade launcher.
During the event, President Abinader reaffirmed the commitment that his government has shown to the Armed Forces and the National Police, highlighting that a country without security cannot guarantee any other activity, neither economic nor social. “We were clear about that and we are clearer about it now.”
The president pointed out that the Dominican Republic shares a border with the most unstable country in all of Latin America, in all of America and among the most unstable in the world, which is why his management has specially reinforced the border area with armor, equipment, weapons, drones and aircraft of the Dominican Air Force that supervise that territory daily. "That is why we have kept it peaceful when there is conflict on the other side."
President Abinader maintained that his Government has not been satisfied only with acquiring equipment, but has also promoted the development of the Dominican Military Industry. In that sense, he congratulated the Ministry of Defense and assured that the country is at the forefront, with a military industry that constitutes an example for Central America and the Caribbean and that is advancing towards the level of the most developed countries in Latin America.
Likewise, he highlighted that few countries assemble aircraft like the Dulus, for which there is already interest from other nations to acquire it, as well as the Furia model, whose different versions have also aroused international interest. He added that the construction and assembly of this equipment, as well as the other products of the Military Industry, including the drones that will soon begin to be assembled, represent a significant saving for the budget of the Dominican Republic.
The head of state stated that these teams guarantee the security of the country and assured that the border is prepared to face any situation that, he said, he hopes will never occur, while reporting that the Government is in the process of tendering the acquisition of more than 760 vehicles for the National Police, along with almost 60 trucks and other equipment, which he defined as the largest purchase made in the history of that institution, with the purpose of strengthening internal security.
Finally, he once again congratulated the Dominican Military Industry for its ability to adapt and assemble new units, highlighting that this process responds to an integrated or multi-manufacturing model, used by military industries and other productive sectors in different parts of the world. "The Dominican Republic is at the forefront of the military industry. Today we have Armed Forces of which we can feel proud, Armed Forces equipped as they have not been in decades."
Military institution increasingly modern, interoperable and prepared
For his part, the Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Carlos Antonio Fernández Onofre, ERD, highlighted that each of the incorporated capabilities responds to a strategic vision aimed at strengthening the protection of national sovereignty, increasing the operational capacity of the Armed Forces and providing the country with an increasingly modern, interoperable military institution prepared to face the threats of the 21st century.
After ensuring that these new vehicles constitute a tangible sample of the talent, innovation and technical capacity of our military professionals, Fernández Onofre highlighted that during these last 6 years, the Armed Forces of the Dominican Republic have experienced one of the most impressive and important transformation and modernization processes in its recent history.
"Mr. President, your firm support has allowed us to move towards a more efficient, more interoperable defense model better prepared to respond to the demands of a national and international environment characterized by increasingly complex and changing threats."
He assured that President Abinader has not spared resources to strengthen the operational capacity of the Armed Forces, modernize processes, incorporate new technologies and train men and women with a deep vocation for service, aware that national defense constitutes one of the fundamental pillars on which the development of the Dominican Republic rests.
"Mr. President, the facilities that we reopen today, the vehicles that we receive today, the Centauro models and the Furia VBD-2 that we present do not constitute a point of arrival, they represent a new starting point, they are part of a continuous process of transformation that will continue to be aimed at strengthening the operational capabilities of our Armed Forces and guaranteeing that each soldier has the necessary means to successfully fulfill the mission that the constitution and the laws entrust to him," said Fernández Onofre.
And he added: "Mr. President, allow me to express to you, once again, on behalf of all the men and women who make up the Armed Forces of the Dominican Republic, our deep gratitude for the permanent support that your government has provided to the strengthening of the military institution. Your strategic vision has allowed the consolidation of a modernization process that today translates into better facilities, greater logistical capacity, new equipment, better training, more advanced technology and a Dominican Military Industry that continues to grow as a symbol of innovation and national pride."
Fernández Onofre also highlighted the work carried out by the Dominican Military Industry, whose projects represent a sample of the talent, technical capacity and commitment of the men and women who promote the development of national solutions to strengthen the defense and security of the country, contributing to the strengthening of the technological self-sufficiency of the Armed Forces.
Upon arrival at the Air Base, President Abinader, supreme authority of the Armed Forces and the National Police, was received with the military-style honors corresponding to his high investiture.

El presidente Abinader sostuvo que su Gobierno no se ha conformado únicamente con adquirir equipos, sino que tambiénha impulsado el desarrollo de la Industria Militar Dominicana. En ese sentido,felicitó al Ministerio de Defensay aseguró que el país está a la vanguardia, con una industria militar que constituye un ejemplo para Centroamérica y el Caribe y queavanza hacia el nivel de los países más desarrollados de Latinoamérica. Asimismo, resaltó quepocos países ensamblan aeronaves como el Dulus, por el que ya existeinterés de otras naciones para adquirirlo,al igual que el modelo Furia, cuyas distintas versiones también han despertado interés internacional. Agregó que la construcción y el ensamblaje de estos equipos, así como de los demás productos de la Industria Militar, incluidos los drones que próximamente comenzarán a ensamblarse, representan unahorro importante para el presupuestode la República Dominicana. El jefe de Estado manifestó que estos equipos garantizan la seguridad del país y aseguró quela frontera está preparada para enfrentar cualquier situaciónque, dijo, espera que nunca ocurra, al tiempo que informó que el Gobierno tiene en proceso delicitación la adquisición de más de 760 vehículos para la Policía Nacional, junto con casi 60 camiones y otros equipamientos, lo que definió como la mayor compra realizada en la historia de esa institución, con el propósito de fortalecer la seguridad interna.
