Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to 4,930
Caracas, July 17 (SANA)The death toll from two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela last month has risen to 4,930, National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez said on Friday.In a post on X, Rodríguez said 6,462 people had been rescued from the rubble. A total of 856 buildings were damaged, including 190 that collapsed, with the worst destruction concentrated in the coastal state of La Guaira.He added that the earthquakes displaced 17,907 people, while 21,210 others remain housed in 107 temporary shelters. More than 128,000 families have received government assistance.Authorities have recorded 1,308 aftershocks sincetwo earthquakesmeasuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck 39 seconds apart on June 24.Rodríguez said the government had deployed more than 1,200 healthcare workers to La Guaira to help prevent disease outbreaks in temporary shelters. The effort is being coordinated with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to strengthen disease surveillance, vaccination campaigns and other public health measures.
