La República Dominicana fortalece la agenda regional para impulsar los derechos de las mujeres rurales
Santo Domingo.–The Dominican Republic reaffirmed its regional leadership in promoting the rights of rural women by bringing together representatives of governments, international organizations, financial entities and social organizations from Latin America and the Caribbean during the International Conference on Rural Women 2030: Innovation, Rights and Sustainable Development in the Americas, a space that allowed consolidating alliances and defining a common agenda to promote sustainable development, food security, economic autonomy and the leadership of women in the region. field.
The conference marked the closing of the national process of territorial consultations developed during recent months in the North, South and East regions of the country. The contributions collected in these meetings will serve as the basis for the preparation of the Country Report on the Situation of Rural Women, an instrument that will guide the formulation of public policies built from the experiences, needs and proposals of rural women themselves.
During the day, national and international representatives agreed that moving towards more inclusive rural development requires expanding women's access to financing, innovation, markets, technical assistance, care systems and spaces for political participation, recognizing their strategic role in food production, environmental sustainability and community development.
The Minister of Women, Gloria Reyes, affirmed that rural women play a fundamental role in the development of the country and maintained that listening to their voices constitutes an essential step to build public policies that respond to their realities and expand their opportunities for development, economic autonomy and participation on equal terms.
One of the main results of the meeting was the presentation of the Dominican Republic Chapter of the Network of Rural Women of Latin America and the Caribbean (Redlac), an initiative that will strengthen the exchange of experiences between rural leaders in the region and promote new opportunities for cooperation. Likewise, the Great National Coalition of Rural Women was presented, conceived as a permanent space for articulation between public institutions, international organizations and social organizations committed to rural development.
The agenda also included the dissemination of the Voluntary Guidelines on Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women and Girls in the Context of Food Security and Nutrition, approved by the Committee on World Food Security (CFS), considered an international reference to guide policies, programs and alliances aimed at reducing inequality gaps in agri-food systems.
OAS launched training for rural women with political aspirations
The conference also served as a stage to present the call for the Milagros Ortiz Bosch High Level Course for Rural Women Aspiring to an Electoral Candidacy, an initiative promoted by the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the School of Government of the OAS, organized together with the Ministry of Women and with the support of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs of France.
The program will offer specialized training to rural women interested in strengthening their leadership, advocacy and political participation capacities, with the purpose of expanding their presence in spaces of representation and contributing to a more inclusive democracy in rural territories.
The conference brought together representatives of the Ministry of the Presidency, Agriculture and Industry, Commerce and MSMEs, in addition to the Technical Secretariat for Food and Nutrition Sovereignty and Security (Setessan), the Agricultural Bank, through its Rural Women Program, the Special Fund for Agricultural Development (FEDA) and the Directorate of Analysis and Coordination of International Cooperation, as well as Prorural Inclusive and Resilient, the Provincial Governments and the Embassy Dominican Republic before the FAO in Rome.
Delegations from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the World Food Program (WFP), UN Women, the Committee on World Food Security (CSA), the Inter-American Commission of Women of the OAS (CIM/OAS), the Council of Ministers of Women of Central America and the Dominican Republic (COMMCA), the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), the Network of Rural Women of Latin America and the Caribbean (Redlac), the National Confederation of Rural Women (Conamuca), the Federation of Businesswomen (FEM) and the Dominican Peasant Movement, along with other international cooperation entities and organizations committed to rural development and gender equality.
The agreements reached during the conference will strengthen the preparation of the Country Report on the Situation of Rural Women and will serve as a basis for the participation of the Dominican Republic in upcoming international scenarios dedicated to food security, rural development and gender equality. With this, the country consolidates an agenda built from the territories and projects a vision of regional cooperation aimed at transforming the demands of rural women into public policies with concrete results.

Los acuerdos alcanzados durante la conferencia fortalecerán la elaboracióndel Informe País sobre la Situación de la Mujer Ruraly servirán de base para la participación de la República Dominicana en próximos escenarios internacionales dedicados a la seguridad alimentaria, el desarrollo rural y la igualdad de género. Con ello, el país consolida una agenda construida desde los territorios y proyecta una visión decooperación regionalorientada a transformar las demandas de lasmujeres ruralesen políticas públicas con resultados concretos.
