Minister Browne marks strong momentum in new home commencements for first half of 2026

New data released today by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage shows that 2,826 new homes were commenced in June, an increase of 105% compared to the same period last year, when 1,381 units commenced.
A total of 15,946 new homes have been commenced since the beginning of the year, up 149% from the 6,414 units that were commenced in first half of 2025.
The positive momentum for the first half of this year builds on strong figures for 2024 and 2025 combined when a total of85,723 new homeswere commenced, representingan increase of 43%compared with the combined total for the previous two-year period (2022 and 2023).
Today’s published data also shows the use of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) has continued to grow in the first half of 2026. The latest data shows that 80% of scheme housing intends to use MMC, and 37% of apartments intending to use MMC also.
Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, welcomed the latest figures:
“I have been driving on to ensure delivery of homes as a matter of serious urgency. It is once again genuinely encouraging to see this strong momentum in the number of new homes being built throughout the country. We want to see this continuing at pace.
“While these positive figures reflect the hard work we have managed to achieve under our Housing Action Plan, I am not taking anything for granted here.
“I am being ambitious, and we have to be. As Minister, I use every lever available to me to continue the progress to date. People need to see these houses getting up and people need to see the keys in their hands.
“I am pleased to see the increasing uptake of Modern Methods of Construction in the building of these new homes as this allows us to not only build homes faster but to do so embedding quality at the core.”
Of the 2,826 units commenced in June, 582 (21%) are scheme dwellings, 1,765 (62%) are apartments and 479 (17%) are for one-off units. A total of 39% (1,074 units) were in the four Dublin local authorities. By Local Authority, the most units commenced were in Dublin City (789), followed by Cork City (328) and Meath County (262).
Single dwellings are one-off dwellings.
Scheme dwellings are houses that form part of a multi-unit development.
Apartment dwellings are within a multi-unit development and are recorded as apartment units in the Building Control Management System (BCMS).
