Obras Públicas inicia construcción del puente de Guayajayuco
Guayajayuco, Elías Piña.-After years of waiting for a definitive solution to guarantee its connection with the rest of the country, the community of Guayajayuco today begins to see that desire become a reality. The Dominican Government, through the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), began the construction work of the bridge over the Artibonito River, a work that will not only put an end to the historic isolation of the community, but also stands as a symbol of Dominicanness.
The event was led by the Minister of Public Works, Eduardo Estrella, and the Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Carlos Antonio Fernández Onofre (ERD). The work represents much more than a road solution: it constitutes a commitment to territorial integration, the security of border communities and the economic development of a historically vulnerable area.
The Minister of Public Works expressed that this bridge is a symbol of Dominicanness, expressing the commitment of the President of the Republic to invest in every corner of the country and his special follow-up to the border issue.
"We want the day we inaugurate this bridge to fill this place with many flags, this bridge means and demonstrates the interest of the president, who invests in every corner of this country, where it is needed, where the people are, and here the country does not end, but rather the Dominican Republic begins. We are committed, because we know that you have gone through many vicissitudes; you will no longer be afraid when the river rises, you will have a bridge with all the guarantees," he stated.
For his part, the Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Carlos Antonio Fernández Onofre, highlighted that the bridge is part of the “Strong Border” project, a comprehensive strategy of the Government to strengthen the presence of the State in the border area through the execution of infrastructure works and the reinforcement of security, promoting works that improve opportunities.
"This is a work with social, political and strategic importance for us, it is part of the Frontera Fuerte project, which we are developing. Today we started the bridge over the Artibonito River to give access to Guayajayuco, a historical claim of the community to have access to the Dajabón province. We will also begin the renovation of the speed bump that connects this community with the International highway, as well as the first palazo of the Tirolí market and other strategic infrastructures announced several weeks ago to complete the project."
Guayajayuco: where a bridge means much more than crossing a river
For the inhabitants of Guayajayuco, the beginning of the work represents much more than the construction of a bridge; It means the end of decades of isolation and the hope of a future with greater opportunities.
"When the river rose we were left incommunicado. Many times we could not go to the hospital, take the children to school or get our products. Seeing that this bridge will finally be a reality gives us hope again," said community member María Altagracia Rodríguez.
The farmer Juan de la Cruz assured that the work will transform the economic dynamics of the area.
"We produce, but moving the harvest has always been a problem. With this bridge we will have faster access to markets and that means better income for our families. It is a change that we have been waiting for all our lives."
Meanwhile, young resident José Miguel Peña highlighted the meaning that the infrastructure has for those who grew up in the community.
"Many thought that Guayajayuco would always remain forgotten. Today we feel that the State is watching us and that our children will have more opportunities without having to leave here. This bridge represents dignity and development for everyone."
Government accelerates the national plan to build, rehabilitate and preserve the country's bridges
Within the framework of this program, the Dominican Government develops the construction and rehabilitation of 53 bridges in different provinces of the country, as part of the Bridge Infrastructure Climate Resilience Program, financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Currently, the contracted works are in the execution phase, marking the beginning of a transformation of the national bridge network through strategic investments aimed at guaranteeing a safer, modern and more resilient infrastructure.
The scope of the program includes the construction of new structures, the rehabilitation and reinforcement of existing bridges, with engineering criteria that seek to prolong their useful life and ensure their adequate performance in the face of extreme weather events. With these interventions, the Government reaffirms its commitment to an infrastructure that not only improves mobility and boosts the economy, but also strengthens the country's capacity to respond to the challenges of development and climate change.
Border authorities celebrate the start of the work
The governors of Elías Piña and Dajabón, Migdaly Antonia de los Santos and Severina Gil Carreras, respectively, participated in the activity; the General Commander of the Army, Major General Jorge Iván Camino Pérez; the mayors of Pedro Santana and Río Limpio, Starlin Alfonso Contreras and Pedro Tejada Martínez, respectively; legislators from the area, as well as community representatives, technicians and engineers from the Ministry of Public Works, among other civil and military authorities.

Por su parte, elministro de Defensa, teniente general Carlos Antonio Fernández Onofre, resaltó que el puente forma parte del proyecto“Frontera Fuerte”,una estrategia integral del Gobierno para fortalecer lapresencia del Estado en la zona fronterizamediante la ejecución de obras de infraestructura y elreforzamiento de la seguridad, impulsando obras que mejoren oportunidades. “Esto es una obra con una importancia social, política y estratégica para nosotros, es parte del proyecto Frontera Fuerte, que estamos desarrollando. Hoy iniciamos el puente sobre el río Artibonito para darle salida a Guayajayuco, un reclamo histórico de la comunidad para tener paso hacia la provincia Dajabón. También iniciaremos el remozamiento del badén que une esta comunidad con la carretera Internacional, así como el primer palazo del mercado de Tirolí y otras infraestructuras estratégicas anunciadas hace varias semanas para completar el proyecto”. Guayajayuco: donde un puente significa mucho más que cruzar un río Para los habitantes de Guayajayuco, el inicio de la obra representa mucho más que la construcción de un puente; significa elfin de décadas de aislamientoy la esperanza de un futuro conmayores oportunidades. “Cuando el río crecía nos quedábamos incomunicados. Muchas veces no podíamos ir al hospital, llevar a los niños a la escuela o sacar nuestros productos. Ver que este puente por fin será una realidad nos devuelve la esperanza”,expresó la comunitariaMaría Altagracia Rodríguez. El agricultorJuan de la Cruzaseguró que la obra transformará la dinámica económica de la zona. “Nosotros producimos, pero mover la cosecha siempre ha sido un problema. Con este puente tendremos acceso más rápido a los mercados y eso significa mejores ingresos para nuestras familias. Es un cambio que llevábamos esperando toda la vida”. Mientras, el joven residenteJosé Miguel Peñadestacó el significado que la infraestructura tiene para quienes crecieron en la comunidad. “Muchos pensaban que Guayajayuco siempre iba a seguir olvidado. Hoy sentimos que el Estado nos está mirando y que nuestros hijos tendrán más oportunidades sin tener que salir de aquí. Este puente representa dignidad y desarrollo para todos”.
