The international forum in Uzbekistan’s capital from April 5-9, 2025, marked a historic milestone for both Uzbekistan and the wider region.
Held in Central Asia for the first time, the Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union elevated interparliamentary dialogue and cooperation to a new level, enhanced Uzbekistan’s international reputation, and reaffirmed its role as an active player in global parliamentary diplomacy.
The document particularly highlights Uzbekistan’s initiatives and practical experience in parliamentary activity, presenting them as an example for other states.
A separate section of the report is devoted to the landmark 150th IPU Assembly held in Tashkent. In particular, the report emphasizes that Uzbekistan organized the forum at a high level and, for the first time in the history of Central Asia, hosted the Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
The composition of the Assembly’s participants was also widely praised. In particular, the share of women parliamentarians exceeded 37 percent – the highest figure since 2022.
The Tashkent Declaration, the Assembly’s key political document, holds a prominent position in the report. It urges parliaments to adopt effective strategies for reducing poverty, foster the growth of a democratic economy that safeguards vulnerable groups, and bolster institutions to efficiently oversee modern technologies, such as artificial intelligence.
The effort to promote gender equality in parliaments, showcased at the IPU Assembly, also garnered significant praise.
The report also positively assessed the holding of seminars on human rights in Uzbekistan and the Senate of the Oliy Majlis’s adoption of a roadmap to harmonize the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s decisions and recommendations with national development priorities.
It is particularly emphasized that IPU experts recognized the Senate of the Oliy Majlis’s systematic and consistent approach to implementing the Assembly’s initiatives and decisions at the national level as an exemplary practice for parliaments in other countries.
