Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi Receives U.S. Secretary of the Treasury in Washington …….. Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi received U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent and the accompanying delegation yesterday evening, Tuesday, Baghdad time, at his residence in Washington, D.C. During the meeting, Prime Minister Al-Zaidi affirmed that Iraq today stands at the threshold of a new phase in which it seeks to build a strong, sovereign state free of corruption and supported by a strong and sustainable economy. He noted that the government has placed combating corruption and restricting arms to the authority of the state at the forefront of its priorities through a package of important measures. The Prime Minister stated that Iraqis will see the results of these measures during the coming year, which will witness improvements across several areas, particularly energy and investment, alongside enhanced stability. He stressed that the government is moving forward with a comprehensive reform and restructuring process for the banking and insurance sectors, as well as tax and customs reform, contributing to the development of a more efficient and sustainable economy. For his part, the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury expressed his country’s support for the Iraqi government’s policy and its serious efforts to shift the relationship between the two countries from a military presence toward investment, economic development, and the advancement of the business sector, and to achieve genuine economic growth through the optimal use of Iraq’s resources and economic potential. Secretary Bessent affirmed the United States’ readiness to assist Iraq and enable it to implement its economic plans and programs, overcome obstacles to development, and work toward establishing a timeline to support the Iraqi economy and advance economic and financial reform.
