La salud mental se consolida como eje prioritario del gobierno del presidente Abinader
Santo Domingo.–The government of President Luis Abinader continues to consolidate mental health as one of its main priorities, through a comprehensive strategy that strengthens prevention, expands the capacity for specialized care and develops new infrastructure to guarantee timely and quality services to the entire population.
The executive director of the National Health Service (SNS), Dr. Julio Landrón, highlighted that, by order of President Abinader, during this year efforts have been intensified to transform mental health care from a comprehensive approach, with actions aimed at promotion, prevention, hospital care and social reintegration of people with mental disorders.
He explained that the SNS develops a broad awareness program aimed at families and the general population about the importance of mental health care, through educational sessions held in First Level Care Centers, Clinical and Diagnostic Centers, hospitals and the media, with the purpose of promoting early detection, reducing stigma and facilitating timely access to specialized services.
In terms of hospital care, Landrón highlighted the historical expansion of crisis intervention beds in the Public Health Network.
"When we took office we found only 47 crisis intervention beds. Today, the country has 314 beds distributed in the main hospitals of the Public Network and our goal is to exceed 500 before the end of this year, so that all provinces have the capacity to respond to mental health emergencies," he said.
He indicated that this strengthening will allow any person, regardless of the community where they reside, to receive specialized, humanized and multidisciplinary care near their place of origin.
Likewise, he reported that the SNS has strengthened mental health units in Public Network hospitals by incorporating psychiatrists, psychologists and crisis intervention teams, guaranteeing a more effective response for patients who require specialized care.
As part of this strategy, medical residencies in Psychiatry are also expanded, with the aim of training new specialists and reducing the existing deficit of these professionals in different regions of the country.
Regarding infrastructure, the head of the SNS reported that new Psychosocial Centers are currently being built in Higüey and Moca, while next August another specialized center will be delivered that will continue to strengthen the national mental health care network.
Likewise, he announced the opening of the first Children's Mental Health Center of the Public Network, which will operate in the facilities where the former Santo Socorro Hospital operated, today Manuel Rodríguez Jiménez Hospital.
This modern center will have more than 17 inpatient beds and will offer comprehensive, specialized and multidisciplinary care for children and adolescents with mental health disorders, becoming a national reference for the exclusive care of this population.
Landrón also reported that work is progressing to launch the Neurosciences Institute, which will operate in the Clinical and Surgical Center of the Luis Eduardo Aybar Health City.
The new institute will house the national residence of Psychiatry and will offer specialized services in neurosciences, strengthening the response capacity of the public system for the care of highly complex mental and neurological diseases.
These actions are part of the commitment assumed by President Luis Abinader to strengthen mental health as a priority public policy, guaranteeing a more accessible, humane and integrated network of services, which allows all Dominicans to receive specialized care with quality and opportunity, regardless of where in the country they reside.

Explicó que el SNS desarrolla unamplio programa de concienciacióndirigido a las familias y a la población en general sobre laimportancia del cuidado de la salud mental, mediante jornadas educativas desplegadas en losCentros de Primer Nivel de Atención,Centros Clínicos y Diagnósticos, hospitales y medios de comunicación, con el propósito de promover ladetección temprana, reducir el estigma y facilitar el acceso oportunoa los servicios especializados. En materia de atención hospitalaria, Landrón resaltó laexpansión históricade las camas de intervención en crisis en la Red Pública de Salud. “Cuando asumimos la gestión encontramos apenas 47 camas de intervención en crisis. Hoy, el país cuenta con 314 camas distribuidas en los principales hospitales de la Red Pública y nuestra meta es superar las 500 antes de finalizar este año, para que todas las provincias dispongan de capacidad de respuesta ante las emergencias de salud mental”,expresó. Indicó que este fortalecimiento permitirá que cualquier persona, sin importar la comunidad donde resida, pueda recibir atenciónespecializada, humanizada y multidisciplinariacerca de su lugar de origen. Asimismo, informó que el SNS hafortalecido las unidades de salud mentalen los hospitales de la Red Pública mediante la incorporación depsiquiatras, psicólogos y equipos de intervención en crisis, garantizando una respuesta más efectiva para los pacientes que requieren atención especializada. Como parte de esta estrategia, también se amplían las residencias médicas en Psiquiatría, con el objetivo de formarnuevos especialistas y reducir el déficitexistente de estos profesionales en distintas regiones del país. En cuanto a la infraestructura, el titular del SNS informó que actualmente se construyennuevos Centros Psicosociales en Higüey y Moca, mientras que el próximo mes de agosto será entregado otro centro especializado que continuará fortaleciendo la red nacional de atención en salud mental. De igual forma, anunció la apertura del primerCentro de Salud Mental Infantil de la Red Pública, que funcionará en las instalaciones donde operaba el antiguo Hospital Santo Socorro, hoyHospital Manuel Rodríguez Jiménez. Este moderno centro contará conmás de 17 camas de internamientoy ofrecerá atenciónintegral, especializada y multidisciplinaria para niños y adolescentescon trastornos de salud mental, constituyéndose en un referente nacional para la atención exclusiva de esta población. Landrón informó, además, que avanzan los trabajos para la puesta en funcionamiento delInstituto de Neurociencias, que operará en el Centro Clínico y Quirúrgico de laCiudad Sanitaria Luis Eduardo Aybar. El nuevo instituto albergará laresidencia nacional de Psiquiatríay ofrecerá servicios especializados en neurociencias,fortaleciendo la capacidad de respuestadel sistema público para la atención de enfermedades mentales y neurológicas de alta complejidad. Estas acciones forman parte delcompromiso asumido por el presidente Luis Abinaderde fortalecer la salud mental como una política pública prioritaria, garantizando una red de serviciosmás accesible, humana e integrada, que permita a todos los dominicanos recibir atención especializada con calidad y oportunidad, sin importar el lugar del país donde residan.
