Pedro Sánchez announces that the Government will mobilise public resources for the "reconstruction" of the areas affected by the fire

The head of the Executive reiterates the Government's proposal to forge "a major State Pact to address the climate emergency," because "the climate emergency kills" and "all public authorities and society as a whole must rise to the challenge that lies ahead".

On 13 July 2026, the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, visited the area affected by the fire in Los Gallardos (Almería). There, he emphasised that the Executive had made "all requested State resources" available to extinguish the blaze and announced that public resources would also be mobilised for the "reconstruction" of affected areas to help mitigate material losses.

The president visited the Forward Command Post in Turre, accompanied by the president of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla; the Government Delegate in Andalusia, Pedro Fernández; and the leader of the PSOE-A, Mª Jesús Montero. There, he met with officials from the emergency and coordination teams working on the fires, acknowledging their frontline efforts to combat the blaze while "risking their lives".

In a statement to the media, Pedro Sánchez expressed his sorrow at the deaths of 13 local residents and conveyed the Government's condolences to their families and loved ones, whilst wishing those injured a speedy recovery.

In his view, what citizens demand is "cooperation, unity and coherent action" from all levels of government - ranging from mayors and provincial councils to the Regional Government of Andalusia and the Government of Spain - "because it is the best way to effectively combat these civil protection crises". In this regard, he emphasised the Government's commitment to "cooperate and respond in a unified manner with the other administrations to this crisis".

Pedro Sánchez pointed out that a third of the land burnt last year in Europe was in Spain, a fact that is closely linked to the worsening climate emergency affecting the Iberian Peninsula, and Spain in particular.

He therefore reiterated the Government's proposal to draw up "a major national agreement to tackle the climate emergency", which would help to prevent such emergencies and ensure greater safety for those living in areas particularly affected by these civil protection emergencies. "The climate emergency kills and as a result, all public authorities and society as a whole must rise to the challenge that lies ahead," he said.

In this regard, the President of the Government of Spain warned that "unfortunately, we are facing a difficult summer that will require us all to remain vigilant and alert, so we can respond with the utmost speed to any eventuality that may arise". Indeed, last May the Government of Spain presented its Firefighting Plan, with capabilities that have been gradually expanded over recent years to ensure a swift and effective response.

Finally, the head of the Executive highlighted European solidarity, through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, which "will be very much needed during these difficult and complex months that lie ahead".
