President concludes official visit to Qatar14 July 2026

His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has returned to Malé following the conclusion of his official visit to the State of Qatar.

The President undertook the visit to pay his respects to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, and the Royal Family following the passing of his father, His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, former Amir of the State of Qatar, last Sunday.

During the visit, the Amir of Qatar received President Dr Muizzu in audience. The President conveyed condolences on behalf of the Government and the people of the Maldives. The two leaders also reaffirmed their shared commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

The President's visit underscores the special importance the Maldives attaches to its longstanding relations with the State of Qatar.

The late former Amir made significant contributions to the Maldives, including facilitating the commencement of Qatar Airways operations in the country, supporting the establishment of Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani School in Laamu Atoll and Masjid al Sheikh Qasim bin Al Thani in Hulhumalé. During his reign as Amir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani paid an official visit to the Maldives in 2005.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and the State of Qatar were established on 26 May 1984. Since then, Qatar has played an important role in supporting the Maldives' development and the well-being of its people.
