Championnat National Scolaire 2026 : La 6ᵉ édition officiellement lancée à Grand-Popo
The Minister of Sports and Civic Engagement, Mr. Benoît DATO, launched the final phase of the 6th edition of the National School Championship on Sunday July 12, 2026 at the Grand-Popo sports stadium. For a week, 1,488 students from the twelve departments of Benin will compete in five sporting disciplines, namely football, handball, volleyball, basketball and athletics. The opening ceremony brought together several members of the Government, notably the Minister of Secondary Education, Dr Clément KOUCHADÉ, the Minister of Decentralization and Local Governance, Mr. Janvier YAHOUÉDÉOU, the Coordinator of the College of Ministers Advisors, Madame Jeanne ADANBIOKOU AKAKPO as well as the Minister Advisor for Health, Madame Rosine DAGNIHO. Organized by the Beninese Office of School and University Sports (OBSSU), this competition which began its qualifiers under the cover of the Program for the Promotion and Development of Sports Activities (PPDAS) has become a major event in school sport, dedicated to the detection and promotion of young talents. The Mayor of Grand-Popo, Mr. Carlos Yao AYIKPE, welcomed the renewed choice of his municipality to host the event, ensuring the mobilization of local authorities in order to offer delegations the best conditions of stay and competition. In his speech officially launching the championship, Minister Benoît DATO welcomed the continuity of this government initiative: "From 2021 to 2026, it has now been six years since this National School Championship has been held and produced talents." Amazones U17, guests of honor, illustrated the results of the sports classes. Around twenty players from this national selection come from this program, proof that the championship constitutes a real springboard towards the high level. Minister Benoît DATO recalled that sport is not limited to performance. According to him, it constitutes above all a school of life, where the values of discipline, respect and responsibility are forged. Referring to the mission of civic engagement now carried by his ministerial department, he called on the "student-athletes", the supervisors and the spectators to demonstrate exemplary and civic-mindedness throughout the competition. Declaring the competition open, the Minister urged young people to reconcile sporting excellence and academic success, relaying the message from the President of the Republic, Romuald WADAGNI: "The champion that you are on the field must also be a diligent student in class.”Through this 6th edition, the Government reaffirms its commitment to investing in youth by strengthening training and support systems for sporting talents.

Une vingtaine de joueuses de cette sélection nationale sont issues de ce programme, preuve que le championnat constitue un véritable tremplin vers le haut niveau.Le Ministre Benoît DATO a rappelé que le sport ne se résume pas à la performance. Selon lui, il constitue avant tout une école de la vie, où se forgent les valeurs de discipline, de respect et de responsabilité. Évoquant la mission d'engagement civique désormais portée par son département ministériel, il a appelé les "élèves-athlètes", les encadrants et les spectateurs à faire preuve d'exemplarité et de civisme tout au long de la compétition.Déclarant la compétition ouverte, le Ministre a exhorté les jeunes à concilier excellence sportive et réussite scolaire, relayant le message du Président de la République, Romuald WADAGNI : « Le champion que vous êtes sur le terrain doit aussi être un élève assidu en classe ».À travers cette 6ᵉ édition, le Gouvernement réaffirme son engagement à investir dans la jeunesse en renforçant les dispositifs de formation et d'accompagnement des talents sportifs.
