6.3-magnitude quake hits Bismarck Sea
Port Moresby, July 13 (SANA)A 6.3-magnitudeearthquakestruck theBismarck Seain the South Pacific on Monday, about 222 kilometers fromPapua New Guinea.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, with its epicenter located at 3.15 degrees south latitude and 148.63 degrees east longitude. No casualties have been reported so far.
The Bismarck Sea was struck by two devastating magnitude-7 earthquakes in 1998, triggering a powerful tsunami that killed at least 2,100 people near the coastal town of Aitape in northern Papua New Guinea.kA.MZN
