Ministerio de Turismo entrega remozado el Alcázar de Colón
Santo Domingo.- The Minister of Tourism, David Collado, handed over the recovery work on the infrastructure of the Alcázar de Colón museum, in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, where he also formally started the work on the public lighting and illumination project in the historic center.
These works are part of the revitalization of the Colonial City and the enhancement of its emblematic historical monuments and the execution of projects that seek to improve the quality of life of its residents and improve development opportunities for the commercial sector.
Collado said that the delivery of the Alcázar de Colón museum is part of that great effort made by the Ministry of Tourism and the Inter-American Development Bank in the total rescue and beautification of the Colonial City.
He stated that, due to these interventions in the Colonial City, 10% of the tourists who arrive in the country visit that historic destination, which represents a great economic impact.
“Today we are here delivering this remodeled museum of the Alcázar de Colón, a symbol of our history, a true tourist attraction,” Collado stated.
The restoration project of this iconic museum, which was carried out at a cost of more than 100 million pesos, allowed the architectural readjustment of this building, through a construction system specialized in heritage conservation.
The fundamental objective of the intervention is to achieve the comprehensive conservation of the building, and covered the following works: restoration of the interior spaces on its two levels; restoration and waterproofing of the roof, renovation of the patio and the maintenance and beautification of all its spaces.
Safety and accessibility measures were also incorporated to allow autonomous, quick and safe movement of people with disabilities; Modern systems to support the operation of the museum and new landscaping were installed.
Likewise, structural pathologies were corrected on its four facades, in the patio and interiors; The interior floors were replaced, the interior bathroom was removed, interior panels were corrected, interior doors and windows were restored, and carved doors were made.
In addition, the stairs to access the interior patio and a ramp for people with disabilities were built. A new storm drainage system, new electrical installations, lighting, air conditioning system and power plant, a fire system, plus video surveillance cameras, are part of the recovery of the iconic museum.
The work was executed by the Executing Committee of Infrastructure of Tourist Areas (Ceiztur) of the Ministry of Tourism, in coordination with the National Directorate of Monumental Heritage (DNPM) of the Ministry of Culture.
The revitalization of the Alcázar de Colón contemplates the incorporation of a new museography with innovative and modern elements, which is in the process of installation.
The main purpose of Mitur in Ciudad Colonial with this project, which is executed with an approximate investment of 86 million pesos, is to rehabilitate, modernize and expand the public lighting system of Ciudad Colonial, in order to guarantee optimal and sustainable operation of this service.
Among the benefits it will provide are improving lighting in the Colonial City, increasing security in the streets and public spaces of the historic center, and increasing energy efficiency using LED lamps. As well as creating an environment with higher levels of security and better coexistence for residents and merchants, as well as a more comfortable and attractive urban space for visitors and the protection of the heritage legacy.
This project seeks to impact streets, squares, parks and public spaces of Ciudad Colonial, including emblematic areas of the historic center such as: Las Damas, Isabel la Católica, Arzobispo Meriño, Hostos, Gabino Puello, Arzobispo Nouel, Las Mercedes, Duarte, Arzobispo Portes, Polvorín, Salome Ureña, Emiliano Tejera and General Cabral.
Also Juan Isidro Pérez, La Noria, Restauración, El Naranjito, Palo Hincado, Peter Díaz, Jobo Bonito. Likewise, the parks Duarte, Colón, San Miguel, San José, Carlos Gardel and Plaza María de Toledo, Tirso de Molina, San Miguel and Pellerano Castro, the periphery of the Monastery of San Francisco and important alleys such as Bacafar, Sal si Podemos, among others.
Among the works that have been carried out is the rehabilitation and maintenance of existing lighting in several streets in the northern area of Ciudad Colonial; replacement and repair of luminaires, control panels, connections and electrical components, as well as technical tests.
As part of the project, more than 2,000 colonial-type ornamental LED luminaires will be installed, 430 purchased new and the rest will be rehabilitated; 193 ornamental arms for installing luminaires on facades, columns and metal profiles, 88 ornamental columns of different heights and configurations.
As well as 513 LED modules and transformers for replacement and modernization of existing luminaires, as well as accessories, electrical components and complementary elements to guarantee efficient and sustainable operation of the entire system.
Both projects are aligned with Mitur's plan to turn the Colonial City into the best in the entire region, with restored museums with competitive and attractive offers, of great interest to tourists who visit us, and a public space that offers all the guarantees of comfort and safety to visitors and employees.

El objetivo fundamental de la intervención es lograr laconservación integral de la edificación, y abarcó las siguientes obras: restauración de los espacios interiores en sus dos niveles; restauración e impermeabilización del techo, remozamiento del patio y el mantenimiento y embellecimiento de todos sus espacios. También se incorporaron medidas deseguridad y accesibilidad, para permitir un desplazamientoautónomo, rápido y segurode personas con discapacidad; se instalaron sistemas modernos de apoyo al funcionamiento del museo y nuevo paisajismo. Asimismo, se corrigieron patologías estructurales en sus cuatro fachadas, en el patio e interiores; se hizo la sustitución de los pisos interiores, remoción de baño interior, corrección de pañetes interiores, restauración de puertas y ventanas interiores y se confeccionaron puertas talladas. Además, se construyó la escalinata de acceso al patio interior y una rampa para personas con discapacidad. Un nuevo sistema de drenaje pluvial, nuevas instalaciones eléctricas, luminarias, sistema de climatización (aire acondicionado) y planta eléctrica, un sistema contra incendios, más cámaras de videovigilancia, son parte de la recuperación del icónico museo. La obra fue ejecutada por elComité Ejecutor de Infraestructuras de Zonas Turísticas(Ceiztur) del Ministerio de Turismo, en coordinación con laDirección Nacional de Patrimonio Monumental(DNPM) del Ministerio de Cultura. La revitalización del Alcázar de Colón contempla la incorporación de unanueva museografíacon elementos innovadores y modernos, la cual se encuentra en proceso de instalación.
