President Aoun reaffirms Lebanon’s commitment to negotiations

Beirut, July 10 (SANA)Lebanese President Joseph Aounreaffirmed on Friday his commitment to negotiations withIsrael, saying the recently signed framework agreement could help restore Lebanon’s rights through diplomatic means, provided Israel complies with its provisions.

According toLebanon‘s National News Agency (NNA), Aoun made the remarks during a meeting with Lebanese Forces Party leader Samir Geagea.

He said negotiations reinforce Lebanon’s sovereignty and its right to determine its own course, away from the consequences of wars imposed on the country, adding that the Lebanese people had paid a heavy price for wars driven by external interests.

Aoun acknowledged that the negotiating track would be difficult because of the balance of power, Israeli calculations, and broader regional and international complexities.

He dismissed criticism of direct negotiations with Israel, noting that Lebanon had engaged in direct talks with Israel since 1949.

The Lebanese president said the framework agreement offers an opportunity to recover rights and gains lost during the war, citing current U.S. engagement and Washington’s ability to press Israel to overcome remaining obstacles.

Aoun also said criticism of the negotiating process stems from attempts to keep the Lebanese file as leverage for Iran, expressing confidence that the situation is moving gradually toward a resolution.

Lebanon and Israel signed a framework agreement on June 26 following a fifth round of negotiations held in Washington.
