Finance minister, Central Bank welcome U.S. move to remove Syria from terrorism list

Damascus, July 9 (SANA)Finance MinisterMohamed Yisr Barniehand Central Bank of Syria GovernorMohammad Safwat Raslanon Wednesday welcomed U.S. PresidentDonald Trump’s decision to begin the process of rescinding Syria’s designation as a State Sponsor of Terrorism, describing the move as a major step toward economic recovery and renewed international engagement.

In a Facebook post, Barnieh said the decision marks “a new chapter” for the Syrian economy by paving the way for greater investment, accelerating economic recovery and supporting Syria’s reintegration into the global economy.

He described the move as a historic milestone for theSyrian peopleand praised Syrian diplomacy and the efforts made “behind the scenes” to achieve what he called a significant accomplishment. Barnieh also expressed appreciation to the United States and its leadership for taking the step.

In a separate post on X, Raslan said the U.S. announcement sends “a positive message to the Syrian people and the international economic community.”

He said the move opens broader prospects for investment, economic recovery and Syria’s reintegration into the global economy, adding that the Central Bank will continue working to strengthen financial stability, build confidence and develop a modern financial sector that supports Syria’s future.

Earlier on Wednesday, PresidentAhmad al-Sharaareceived a message from President Trump confirming that he had notified Congress of his decision to begin the process of rescinding Syria’s State Sponsor of Terrorism designation. Under U.S. law, Congress will conduct a 45-day review before the decision can become final.
