ETED anuncia la mayor incorporación de almacenamiento de energía del Caribe

Santo Domingo.-The Dominican Electric Transmission Company (ETED) will contract, no later than August, 600 megawatts (MW) of energy storage for two hours, an initiative that will allow the largest incorporation of storage systems in the Caribbean and strengthen the reliability and stability of the National Interconnected Electric System (SENI).

The announcement was made by the executive vice president of the ETED, Alfonso Rodríguez Tejada, during his participation in the conversation “ETED's look at the next phases of energy transition”, within the framework ofEnergyearCaribe 2026, held in Santo Domingo, where he reported that the institution has already received the offers from the agents of the sector interested in developing the project, following the call for interest made in March of this year.

He explained that the Superintendency of Electricity is currently reviewing the contracts for their approval and that the goal is to conclude the contracting process during the month of August. He specified that the investment will be carried out by the private sector and that the assets will remain under the property of the ETED, after the transformation of the institution into a public limited company 100 %state, mechanism that will ensure compliance with contracts.

The executive vice president pointed out that one of the main challenges of the ETED is not only to incorporate renewable energies, but to guarantee the integration of all the generation sources that converge in the SENI, including thermal and renewable energies, in an increasingly diversified energy matrix, which requires a more complex, safe and efficient operation.

Technological modernization and digital sovereignty

In this context, Rodríguez Tejada highlighted that the company has launched an extensive technological modernization process to strengthen the operation of the electrical system. As part of this process, he reported that the ETED put into operation the first real-time operation simulator of the Energy Control Center, a tool that has allowed the training and certification time for new operators to be reduced from approximately two years to six months.

He pointed out that one of the main objectives of the institution is to achieve digital sovereignty, which is why ETED awarded the construction of a modern Data Center, which will serve as a backup the transactions of the Coordinating Body and will allow managing the operation of the system, integrating new digital substations, storage systems, technological platforms and incorporating artificial intelligence tools, a transformation that will increase the reliability, security and efficiency of the transmission network.

Likewise, he stated that the institution develops the largest investment in education, human capital formation and specialized training carried out in the last decade, through the hiring of new professionals, specialized courses and technical exchange programs in countries such as China, Chile and Spain, in coordination with international organizations and the Superintendency of Electricity, and that it executes largest hiring of human talent in its history.

He also highlighted that the ETED promotes the training of new professionals through sponsorship of scholarships at national universities, with the purpose of encouraging the study of electrical engineering and strengthening the preparation of specialists in electronics, automation, artificial intelligence and other technologies linked to the development of the electrical system, faced with an increasingly electrified economy that will demand highly trained engineers.

Rodríguez Tejada recalled that the ETED has also strengthened its operational capacity through investments in infrastructure, specialized equipment and vehicles, which has significantly increased its response capacity to extraordinary events and contingencies in the transmission network.

Finally, he stated that the ETED will continue to play a fundamental role as an enabler of the energy and digital transition of the Dominican Republic, guaranteeing a reliable, resilient transmission network prepared to integrate the new technologies demanded by the country's development.
