Red Nacional de Trauma ha reducido en un 6 % la mortalidad de pacientes por accidentes de tránsito

SantoDomingo.-The director of the Traumatological Teaching University HospitalDr. Ney Arias Lora, Dr. Víctor Rosario Suazo, highlighted that the center's priority is to preserve the lives of patients, reporting that 98% of those admitted due to trauma manage to survive, according to the hospital's internal statistics.

The specialist stated that this result reflects the strengthening of the specialized care provided by the National Trauma Network, a strategy that has contributed to reducing the mortality of patients affected by traffic accidents by 6% during its two years of operation.

“The patient who arrives at the hospital has a 98% chance of surviving, according to the hospital's internal statistics,” said Rosario Suazo.

The orthopedic surgeon reported that the center receives around 150 patients daily for emergencies, a figure that increases to between 250 and 300 during the weekends. He also indicated that around 700 consultations are carried out each day.

He added that the hospital has 60 hospital beds and currently maintains an occupancy close to 80%.

During an interview on the program La Revista 110, Rosario Suazo explained that the National Trauma Network was created in response to the high numbers of traffic accidents recorded in the Dominican Republic and to guarantee specialized and timely care for polytraumatized patients.

“In the country, almost 3,000 deaths have been recorded each year due to traffic accidents since 2016. 70% correspond to motorcycle accidents and the National Trauma Network has been able to improve these indicators,” he noted.

He indicated that the Network is made up of the Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia Traumatological Hospital, in Higüey; Azua Traumatological Hospital; Professor Juan Bosch Traumatological Hospital, in La Vega; Dr. Darío Contreras; Dr. Ney Arias Lora, both in Santo Domingo; Puerto Plata Traumatology; Valverde Traumatology and the Yaguate Traumatology Hospital, in San Cristóbal, whose opening is scheduled for next November.

The specialist highlighted that, through the National Trauma Network, patients, regardless of their social or economic condition, have access to prostheses when they require them. He explained that these devices are covered by the Health Risk Administrators (ARS), both in the contributory and subsidized regimes.

The National Trauma Network is a strategy promoted by the National Health Service (SNS) to strengthen timely care for polytraumatized patients and reduce mortality associated with serious injuries due to traffic accidents.

The network has specialized hospitals strategically distributed in different regions of the country and has heliports to facilitate the air transfer of patients, in coordination with the Ministry of Defense and emergency response agencies.
