MOPC pone en funcionamiento el puente peatonal de la avenida Ortega y Gasset

SantoDomingo.-After remaining out of service for more than two decades, the pedestrian bridge on Ortega y Gasset Avenue is now operational, restoring security and tranquility to thousands of people who pass through one of the busiest roads in the National District every day.

Dozens of citizens have begun to use the rehabilitated structure to cross the avenue safely, leaving behind the risk that crossing the road between moving vehicles represented for years.

The work, intervened by the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), responds to a long-awaited need of the community and benefits patients, families, students, soldiers, athletes, employees and citizens who travel daily to the Central Hospital of the Armed Forces, the facilities of the Juan Pablo Olympic Center Duarte, Metro stations, shops and other institutions in the area.

Although the bridge was built in 2004, it was never put into service. For approximately 20 years it remained unused and exposed to deterioration, until the MOPC carried out its comprehensive rehabilitation. The structure, 33 meters long, now safely reconnects both sides of Ortega y Gasset Avenue.

The work included the replacement of damaged metal elements, repair of areas affected by corrosion, structural reinforcement and complete conditioning of the walkway to ensure safe and reliable pedestrian traffic.

The first reactions of users reflect the immediate impact of rehabilitation.

Máximo Florentino Candelario summed up the feelings of many citizens: "This is very good. That crossing down there is very dangerous."

For Allison Feliz Lorenzo, the work represents an important change in daily mobility. “This bridge now becomes a very beneficial way for pedestrians.”

While Esteban Ogando highlighted the human value of the intervention: “This is saving lives, this is progress, because not everyone who leaves home returns.”

Another user, identified as Juanita, expressed: “Now we are safer, because that street is too dangerous to cross.”

More than recovering a structure, the intervention gives citizens a safe space to move around, reduces exposure to accidents and reaffirms the commitment of the Dominican Government to continue carrying out works that improve the quality of life of the population.
